Sex, revenge, betrayal... let the games begin. Antaeus Theatre Company presents a fully partner-cast production of Les Liaisons Dangereuses, Christopher Hampton's Olivier, Evening Standard and New York Drama Critic's Circle Award-winning adaptation of the scandalous novel by Choderlos de Laclos. Directed by Robin Larsen, Les Liaisons Dangereuses opens on Oct. 26and Oct. 27 (one opening for each cast), running through Dec. 10 at theKiki & David Gindler Performing Arts Center in Glendale. Low-priced previews begin on Oct. 19.

Antaeus Theatre Company has announced an electric slate of plays for its 2017-18 season at the Kiki & David Gindler Performing Arts Center in Glendale. Best known for its meticulous productions of classical theater, Antaeus Theatre Company will push boundaries with four plays aimed squarely at modern sensibilities.

While the writing is a bit disjointed and the story much too difficult to follow due to many comments spoken only in Polish by Ilia Volok as Zemon, a Polish taxi driver who provides various services to Maria, the acting by the two leads Seamus Mulcahy and Deanna Dunagan is superb. But while their characters are fascinating in their complexity and Robin Larsen's direction keeps the action moving briskly around the three rooms making up Tom Buderwitz's scenic design (which places the set in the middle of the space with audience members seated on both sides), this up close and personal theatrical experience seems to have something lacking in the fabric of the writing to keep you interested in what exactly is going on between these two lost souls.

Anton Chekhov (1860-1904) wrote plays more character-heavy than plot-heavy, with unhappy Russians bemoaning their past and current plights. As a result, productions must be cast with actors who understand internal character motivation and insights (or lack thereof). Antaeus' latest production of a Chekhov play is "Uncle Vanya," (from 1898), in a West Coast premiere of the 2012 translation by esteemed American playwright Annie Baker, double cast as always (this one is The Mermaids).
