Little Amal, a 12-foot puppet representing a Syrian refugee girl, is embarking on a 6,000-mile journey across the United States. Don't miss her visit to Southwest Detroit on September 27th for an outdoor performance and celebration at Matrix Theatre Company.

Preparations are underway for the Second Annual Solo Performance Festival which takes place at Matrix Theatre Saturday, June 24 from 1-9pm. 

Matrix Theatre Company presents its second 2022-2023 Mainstage Theatre production, the world premiere of the R&J Project, by local playwright Craig Ester, in partnership with Break the Chain Theatre Company, opening February 10th and running through February 26, Fridays and Saturdays at 8PM and Sundays at 3PM.

The Southwest Holiday Fest is Southwest Detroit’s family - friendly, free holiday festival offering new and returning visitors fun winter-themed free activities. Matrix Theatre Company opens its 2022-2023 Mainstage Season with, Swimming While Drowning by local playwright Emilio Rodriguez, opening December 2 and running through December 17.

Kate Brennan and Harvey Reed return to Matrix Theatre Company Friday, September 23 at 7:30 pm with their new jazz cabaret show, Everything's Rosie: A Celebration of Rosemary Clooney. Antaeus Theatre Company presents the Los Angeles premiere of Everybody, a funny, provocative and very modern riff on a 15th-century morality play by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, directed by Jennifer Chang.

Creativity workshops for all ages, a Solo Performance Festival and Summer Creativity Camp make for a busy and exciting summer at Matrix Theatre Company.

In partnership with Eastern Michigan University (EMU), Matrix Theatre Company presents a lively staged reading of Muriel Rukeyser’s play/musical, Houdini, Saturday March 26, 8 pm and Sunday, March 27, at 3 pm at Matrix Theatre Company, located at 2730 Bagley Avenue in the heart of Mexicantown. 

From October 15th to November 1st, the Ringwald Theatre in Ferndale brings you Puffs, a play that serves as a comedic parody of the Harry Potter series. Ahead of Ringwald's premiere, BWW Detroit had the pleasure of interviewing Joe Bailey, Phoenix Eldridge, and Asia Marie Hicks.

In honor of the presidential inauguration, Matrix Theatre Company, in cooperation with C&G Collective, will re-release theR.A.C.E., an original film which explores Detroiters’ perspectives on leadership and civility. For only $10 the film can be viewed at any time between Monday, January 18 – Friday, January 24.

Following COVID-19 protocol (Masks and health screening at registration required), Matrix Theatre Company presents The Electoral Chaotic Tuesday, November 3, a FREE-OF-CHARGE, “carnivalesque” outdoor event anchored in southwest Detroit around Matrix Theatre Company at 2730 Bagley in the heart of Mexicantown. Artistic Directors of 44 Intimate (aka 99-Seat) non-profit theatres have created a roundtable to discuss the post COVID-19 re-emergence of theatre in Los Angeles. Today the group released the following statement:

The Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle has announced the nominees for theatrical excellence for the year 2019. This year they are forgoing their annual event ceremony and will instead post the award recipients online in the upcoming weeks: 

Due to Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer's' temporary ban on all large group events in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19, theatres across the state are postponing and/or canceling performances. Returning after sold-out crowds during its past runs, UnTheatre Co. kicks off another presentation of Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind, an attempt to perform 30 plays in 60 minutes. The extended run opens January 11 through February 16, 2020. Performances will run on Saturdays at 8PM and Sundays at 6PM and will take place at Matrix Theatre Company, located at 2730 Bagley in the heart of Detroit's Mexicantown, 48216.

Tony Award-nominated playwright Neil LaBute, joined the cast and director of A DARK DARK HOUSE for a post-show discussion on Sunday, December 15. Theatre and Opera scenic designer Andromache Chalfant, moderated.

Knife Edge Production of Neil LaBute's play, In a Dark Dark House, opened on December 10 at A.R.T/New York Theatres in Midtown Manhattan. The critically acclaimed production runs through December 21.
