Edinburgh looks very different this Christmas to any other year in recent memory. However, despite the lack of any live activity, City of Edinburgh Council and its Edinburgh's Christmas producer, Underbelly, wanted to mark Light Night, the traditional switch-on, which is usually seen by thousands of locals every year, with something different to mark 2020 – the Christmas Rainbow.

Edinburgh's Christmas is set to help the city celebrate Christmas safely and differently this year, with the announcement of a new digital programme by Underbelly, Producers of Edinburgh's Christmas.

Tonight the historic streets at the heart of Edinburgh's Old Town flowed with a flaming river of light as 40,000 people gathered for the magical Torchlight Procession in partnership with VisitScotland, providing a spectacular start to Edinburgh's Hogmanay.

On Sunday 17 November an estimated 12,000 people gathered in the Royal Mile, the heart of the Scottish capital, to take part in the traditional Light Night celebrations which mark the official start of Edinburgh's Christmas 2019!

The Scottish capital's hugely popular Christmas celebrations officially start this weekend with Light Night on Sunday, 17 November at 3.30pm. The free community event will showcase Edinburgh's musical talent, and Santa himself will make a special exit as he lights up the city and gets the festive season off to a 'flying' start.

On behalf of City of Edinburgh Council, Underbelly presents the full programme of Edinburgh's Christmas 2019, the hugely popular, world-renowned celebrations which last year welcomed almost 1 million unique visitors snapping over 771,000 tickets to its various events, attractions, rides and markets, with 99% of visitors rating them very good or good and 8 out of 10 people saying they would be very likely to recommend Edinburgh's Christmas.
