Mike Musick is the new cultural events coordinator for Western Illinois University's College of Fine Arts and Communication (COFAC), as of July 1, according to Dean Paul Kreider.

As COFAC's cultural events coordinator, Musick (pronounced music) will work with the Performing Arts Society, which includes community and University volunteers who are patrons of the arts and are dedicated to advancing arts programming at Western Illinois University. PAS raises funds through memberships and social fundraising to support arts programming, which includes the Youth Performing Arts Series (YPAS) and Western's signature yearlong series, the Bureau of Cultural Affairs (BCA), as well as other arts-related events. He will serve as adviser to the BCA.

"We are pleased to welcome Mike Musick to the COFAC team. He brings to Western many years of exceptional producing and theatrical experience, appropriate academic credentials and much enthusiasm and energy," said Kreider. "We enthusiastically look forward to his leadership of the BCA and know that he will fit in with the rest of the administrative team to further the goals and mission of the college."

Musick comes to Western Illinois from Shawnee, KS, where, for the past eight years, he was the fine and cultural arts manager for the Johnson County Park and Recreation District and the executive producer for The Theatre in the Park, the largest outdoor community theatre in the U.S.

He brings more than 35 years of multifaceted experience in the entertainment industry, having worked in theatre and live performance as an actor, musician, stage manager, writer, set designer, lighting designer, costume designer, sound designer, carpenter, producer, camera operator, event coordinator, director, booking agent, administrator, teacher and consultant. He also provides consultation for the American Opera Studio.

Musick began his professional training with an internship at Music Theatre of Wichita. Following his graduation from Kansas State University (B.S. theatre, 1986), he joined the Complex Improvisational Theatre as an actor and writer and later became the business manager and touring manager. In New York City, Musick served four years as operations manager of the Westbeth Theatre Center in Greenwich Village; worked on development teams for Cy Coleman's musical "The Life," as well as "The Cardigans" and "The Taffetas;" and was a production team member for "Laughing Matters," directed by Martin Charnin.

Western's new cultural event coordinator has worked with Beth Ehlers, longtime actor on "Guiding Light," who is now on "All My Children;" Kate Collins of "All My Children;" and Robert Newman and Matt Servitto, while serving as an assistant stage manager and understudy for "Quiet on the Set" at the Orpheum Theater in New York. He has also worked on "Doogie Houser, M.D.;" and has participated in a variety of movies and commercials, including playing the "before" guy in the Nordic Track American skier commercial.

Musick earned his Master of Arts in Art Policy and Administration (2000) at The Ohio State University. While at Ohio State, he managed the Battelle Endowment for Technology and Human Advancement (BETHA), worked for OSU President E. Gordon Gee and interned with the Contemporary American Theater Company (CATCO).
