The first-ever New Works Virtual Festival kicks off tonight! Every evening from December 5th - 25th of 2020 at 8PM EST/5PM PT, the New Works Virtual Festival will stream video readings of 20 new scripts of non-musical pieces (19 plays, 1 teleplay) as well as an 21st (a 'Christmas Special') featuring the work of a diverse group of writers and all-star cast members.

Despite being birthed in the early 1990's, THE SISTERS ROSENSWEIG-the late Pulitzer Prize-winning Wendy Wasserstein's acerbically witty and vibrantly poignant play about a trio of fascinating, strong-willed Jewish-American sisters-has a remarkably timeless, relatable quality, evidenced by South Coast Repertory's delightful and beautifully-acted OC revival production now continuing performances in Costa Mesa through June 2. Thanks to its naturally appealing characters that don't feel like stock archetypes trapped in a retro bubble, the play-under the keen direction of Casey Stangl-comes across as a contemporary-leaning, very thoughtful theatrical piece populated by strong, three-dimensional female characters.

With the world on the brink of war, the judgment of an untested president is called into question. What kind of intellectual and emotional stamina does it take to make the right decision?

An all-star cast is set for world premiere docudrama THE TUG OF WAR by David Rambo, an L.A. Theatre Works-commissioned work that explores decision-making by a president in crisis. The production will run for five performances only, May 25-28, at UCLA's James Bridges Theater.

Utilizing a sort of amusing, somewhat wacky plot that somehow works in a sustainably fresh, surprisingly plausible, and audaciously charming way, the world premiere production of playwright Michael Mitnick's thoroughly engaging new play THE SIEGEL---continuing at SCR in Costa Mesa through April 23---proves itself quickly to be one of this season's must-see new plays. Of course, when you see the cast list before even knowing anything about the play, THE SIEGEL is already proving to be quite a curiosity-baiting production. But if you look past the familiar star-wattage and observe the interesting characters and the absorbing story, you'll discover a witty, entertaining, and even thought-provoking comedy that will have you asking... 'are we in a relationship with the right person?'

South Coast Repertory will produce the world premiere of The Siegel by Michael Mitnick (March 24-April 23, Segerstrom Stage). The cast is led by Ben Feldman and Mamie Gummer and features Amy Aquino, Matthew Arkin, Devon Sorvari andDominique Worsley. The Siegel, directed by Casey Stangl, is part of the Pacific Playwrights Festival, the theatre's annual new-play showcase. Right at the start of Robert Schenkkan's mesmerizing Tony Award-winning play ALL THE WAY---now playing in an outstanding new production at Orange County's South Coast Repertory in Costa Mesa through October 2---actor Hugo Armstrong is introduced in what would become one of the most powerful, fiery acting performances I have witnessed on this very stage. Commanding, and yet remarkably relatable without ever traversing caricature, Armstrong deftly portrays one of American History's most complex leaders, our 36th President, Lyndon B. Johnson. Armstrong's powerhouse portrayal is the explosive epicenter of a richly dense, dialogue-heavy drama that recounts the rocky 11-month period leading up to Johnson's re-election as the leader of the world's most powerful nation. The play spends its entirety focusing on this contentious time which finds Johnson pushing for the passage of the Civl Rights Act---which itself incites a tug-of-war between his longtime pro-segregation Dixiecrat friends and the African-American community lobbying for rights that have been long overdue.
