Honolulu Theatre for Youth (HTY) will present the world premiere of Happy, Sad, Sad, Happy, by Annie Cusick Wood and The HTY Ensemble. The show was developed through a grant from the Hawaii State Department of Health, Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion Division as an initiative to promote Health Equity. 

Honolulu Theatre for Youth (HTY) opens its 68th season this month with the world premiere of The Paʻakai We Bring by Moses Goods and The HTY Ensemble. Conch Shell Productions, Braata Productions and Kumu Kahua Theatre have formed an alliance designed to spotlight Black and Indigenous People of Color in America, responding to systemic racism and oppression in America.

HTY is pleased to announce the world premiere of The Carp Who Would Not Quit created by Reiko Ho and the HTY ensemble. Audiences will enjoy these tellings of traditional fables from Japan and Okinawa that teach important lessons of persistence, respect and kindness. Introducing music, language and performance traditions from these cultures, this interactive performance is specifically developed for our youngest audience members and their families (3+ years).

HTY has announced the Hawaii premiere of Rainbow created and designed by filmmaker, Adam Larsen, and the HTY ensemble. Simple science, ancient stories, and the emotions we associate with colors come to life in this immersive, theatrical journey which explores one of Hawaii's most important symbols, the rainbow.

The production is a new telling of the Cinderella story that mixes modern K-pop with traditional Korean drumming, dance and costumes, and kicks off Honolulu Theatre for Youth's 2019-2020 season.

Honolulu Theatre for Youth's 64th Season culminates in a new musical rendition of the classic children's story about a puppet that longs to be a "real" boy.  The playful new musical features an original score, dancing marionettes, crafty animals and a nose that stretches over a yard when Pinocchio tells a fib. Woven throughout is the theme of sincere love between a parent and child and the importance of telling the truth.  The show is appropriate for children aged 5 and up.

Trash & Treasure is a highly interactive adventure that spurs kids' to learn about the value of rubbish.  The short play follows Truckster, a talking garbage truck, and his best friend Sortie as they sing and dance their way through a day in the life of our garbage.   Introducing concepts of reducing, reusing and recycling the play will appeal to any child who has ever rushed to the window to watch a garbage truck pass by or any family who wonders how they can help make a difference in our environment.

Honolulu Theatre for Youth's SHOCKA: The Story of Energy & Hawaii is currently touring the neighbor islands and will have one public performance at UH Hilo Performing Arts Center on Friday, November 9 @ 7:00 pm.

Honolulu Theatre for Youth's season finale SHOCKA: The Story of Energy and Hawaii completes a three part series of original musical theatre productions exploring topics important to Hawaii's keiki.  Following the company's exploration of local food and water, SHOCKA focuses on Hawaii's energy future.  From the energy that fuels our bodies to how we power our electrical grid this sci-fi rock musical educates and entertains audiences of all ages.  "One of our most important roles as an organization is to include young people in the conversations that are shaping their future and there is nothing more impactful to our future in Hawaii right now than energy" says HTY's Artistic Director, Eric Johnson. SHOCKA will have audiences dancing in their seats while transforming them into the Energy Stars our future needs!

The boundless imagination of a child kindled by loneliness and driven by a desire for adventure can breathe life into anything, even a red balloon. Opening January 12 at Honolulu Theater for Youth, filled with whimsy and charm, internationally acclaimed The Red Balloon will warm your heart while artfully approaching the very serious topic of bullying.
