Lizzy & the Triggermen, a 10-piece jazz band helmed by Lizzy Shapiro, delights in infusing swing era music with a modern sound – “Duke Ellington meets Amy Winehouse,” as Shapiro describes it. They’ll be making a stop at Joe’s Pub for a double-header on April 6th. Shapiro and I spoke about the upcoming show, the origins of the band, and more.

Austin-based singer-songwriter Ruthie Foster was nominated for Best Contemporary Blues Album at the 66th GRAMMY Awards for her critically acclaimed ninth studio album Healing Time, which was released in 2022 via Blue Corn Music. This marks Foster's fifth career GRAMMY nomination to date.

Luminol features collaborations from various artists including The Flenser label mate Dan Barrett (Have A Nice Life) as well as Tucker Theodore, Angel Diaz (Vyva Melinkolya), Zachary Cole Smith, Ben Newman, and Colin Caulfield (DIIV).

When 2020 began, Johnston had several national and international tours planned (including a highly anticipated set at the year’s Roadburn Festival) to promote her album released just prior, the critically-acclaimed Forever. 

Due out December 11th on The Flenser, No Moon is a gorgeous chillwave/post-punk record with nine new bleak yet blissful songs.

Next year, The Flenser will be celebrating 10 years of releasing music.  The label will mark the occasion at the 2020 edition of Roadburn Festival in Tilburg, Netherlands with a showcase featuring some of their current artists (including the European debut of Giles Corey with a full band).  Flenser artists performing at Roadburn 2020 (April 16-19): Giles Corey, Midwife, Drowse, Elizabeth Colour Wheel, and Mamaleek.  

The innovative new-music ensemble The International Street Cannibals (ISC) presents Schoenberg DNA a concert of vocal and chamber works featuring the brilliant duo of pianist Conor Hanick and soprano Ariadne Greif, with award-winning violinist Anna Tsukervanik. Centered around Schoenberg's radical musical ideas, the program will trace an evolutionary trajectory starting from Beethoven and Schumann, to Alma Maria Schindler-Mahler, to the Second Viennese School with Alban Berg and Anton Webern, all the way to the music of the great Hungarian composer Gy rgy Kurtag. Hanick and Greif will traverse a repertoire of art songs spanning from 1825 to 1908, and Tsukervanik will join Hanick to perform works for violin and piano by Webern and Kurt g. The concert is presented by The International Street Cannibals (ISC) and is a creation of Ariadne Greif, Conor Hanick, and ISC's founder/director Dan Barrett.

Following a pair of wildly successful Flenser showcases last weekend, New England experimentalists Have A Nice Life have announced a forthcoming string of tour dates that will sweep North America this summer. Dubbed the “Sea Of Worry” Tour, the duo will be joined by CONSUMER (avant-doom project featuring members of HANL) and one-man post-metal virtuoso Planning For Burial. Tickets for all tour dates will go on sale this Wednesday, March 20, at 10 AM EST. A full tour itinerary can be found below.

The Eighth Annual Bickford Benefit Concert featuring an all-star ensemble of outstanding jazz artists from the Tri-State area comes to the Bickford Theatre at the Morris Museum for one night only on Monday, November 12, 2018 at 7:30 PM. The ensemble includes trumpeter/vocalist Bria Skonberg, cornetist Warren Vache, trombonist Mariel Bildsten, clarinetist Dan Levinson, pianist Rossano Sportiello, guitarist/vocalist Molly Ryan, bassist Rob Adkins, and drummer Mark McLean.  All of the ticket sales from this concert will go to support programming at the Bickford Theatre.

The new music ensemble, International Street Cannibals (ISC), presents "The Easily Satisfied Lover" - an evening of vocal works from the period of early modernism, which turns its lens on archaic male narratives of romance and reframes them through the voice and sensibility of a 21st century woman. Central to the evening is the performance of Arnold Schoenberg's monodrama, Pierrot Lunaire, op. 21 (1912) - a fantastical setting of 21 poems by Belgian symbolist poet Albert Giraud and freely translated in German by Otto Erich Hartleben. The program is a creation of soprano Ariadne Greif, Los Angeles-based director Gray Palmer, and ISC's founder/director Dan Barrett. It features conducting by maestro Christopher Lyndon-Gee; film footage by Swiss-Japanese filmmaker Caroline Mariko Stucky, especially created for this performance; and technical direction and stage management by Tyler Learned.
