Ahanti has been a professional performer for the past twenty - some years. A seasoned Actor, Musician, Spoken word Artist, Choreographer, and teaching artist, Ahanti is also a company member at Penumbra Theatre Most recent credits include Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Two Trains Running, Zooman and the sign, Jitney. As an international artist, Ahanti has been feature on the following stages; The Guthrie Theatre, 10,000 things, Great American History Theatre,the fitzgerald theatre The Illusion Theatre, RoundHouse Theatre (Maryland), Intermedia Arts MN, Alchemy Theatre, Arizona Theatre company (Arizona), Herberger theatre (Arizona), Walker Art center, Paramount Theatre, Patinoire Saint-Léonard (Switzerland). As a musician Ahanti has toured internationally with Edupoetic Enterbrainment (spoken word band) producing 3 albums. His pioneering work with such groups as Sirius B (black male performance artist collective) , African Perfection (drill team), In Da Belly (social change theater), Royal guard (drum and bugle corps) and his work as a teaching artist at Walker west music academy, Vocal essence, Stepping Stone Theatre and many more, have made Ahanti Young a recognizable face within the national artist community.

BLACKNESS IS… Arts Festival Lineup and Artists Announced


MN Black Theatre Circle, in partnership with the Guthrie Theater, will present Blackness Is…, a theater-inspired arts festival to be streamed May 21–22 at 7:30 p.m. and May 23 at 7 p.m. CDT. Over the course of three days, the festival will offer a dynamic and diverse showcase of theater, music, dance, poetry and spoken word.

August Wilson's Two Trains Running, the seventh in his 10-part, decade-by-decade saga of ordinary African Americans in the turbulent 20th century that The New York Times described as his "most adventurous and honest attempt to reveal the intimate heart of history," will be on stage at Tucson's Temple of Music & Art Jan. 19-Feb. 9 and at the Herberger Theater Center in Phoenix, Feb. 14-March 3.

Penumbra Theatre Extends August Wilson's JITNEY

Mixed Blood Theatre's YOUNG NEGRESS STEPPING OUT OF THE RIVER AT DAWN Opens Today


Mixed Blood will welcome its 3rd world premiere of the season, a love story about Rwandan immigrants living in America, trying to recreate the traditional wedding ceremonies in a new place, while simultaneously struggling with the violent atrocities of their past. The production follows the structure of a traditional Rwandan wedding ceremony and features live drumming and dance.

The Guthrie Theater Announces THE BROTHERS SIZE Casting


The Guthrie Theater today announced casting for the Pillsbury House Theatre and The Mount Curve Company co-production of The Brothers Size- described as 'an exuberantly theatrical drama from one of the country's most exciting new voices that weaves together brothers, the bayou, and African mythology to create a stylized story of love and heartache.' Written by Tarell Alvin McCraney and directed by Marion McClinton, The Brothers Size will be performed in the Guthrie's Dowling Studio from September 7-29, 2012.

Directed by Lou Bellamy, MA RAINEY'S BLACK BOTTOM plays in Tucson at the Temple of Music and Art from October 16 through November 6. It continues its run in Phoenix at the Herberger Theater Center from November 11 through November 28. The Tucson media sponsors for the 2010-2011 season are KGUN9, MIX-FM and Tucson Lifestyle.
