The same week Russia launched its full-scale war on Ukraine, director Emma Denson discovered a translation of Bohdan Boychuk’s play, Hunger, a visceral depiction of Stalin’s 1933 famine-genocide in Ukraine, known as the Holodomor. This performance is a staged reading of a bilingual adaptation of the original play created by the director in collaboration with Maria Rewakowicz, a Ukrainian scholar and writer and Boychuk’s former spouse. Their reframing focuses on the impact of the Holodomor on four generations of women. The performance will be followed by a talk with actor Marina Vogtsberger about her grandmother’s experience as a child during the Holodomor and a presentation by Ukrainian Canadian designer Stephanie Bahniuk on imagining a future full production of Hunger. A staged reading of this work premiered in January 2023 at the Irish Arts Center as part of the Origin Theatre Company’s First Irish Festival
