HAIR (The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical)

HAIR” Grows Again At Island ETC Rock music, counter-culture, and the sexual revolution take center stage in the classic musical, HAIR, presented by Island ETC March 9 through April 7, 2018. Set in New York City in the late 1960’s HAIR is the iconic staging of America’s peace-love culture. Also known as the “American Tribal Love-Rock Musical,” HAIR tells the story of “The Tribe,” a group of politically active friends who are part of the immerging hippie generation and the issues that surround them – sex, drugs, and the Vietnam War. The musical questions standards of morality, sexuality, individualism, racism, violence, drug use, loyalty, and social acceptance – prominent issues whose relevance unfortunately continues in the United States today. The ‘Tribe’ yearns to find a new way; their goal is to change the world. They exuberantly create their own rights of passage through the confusion around them. With themes of alienation and civil disobedience, HAIR illustrates the 60’s generation’s search for meaning through ‘be-ins,” “love-ins,” and protests. With book and lyrics by Gerome Ragni and James Rado and music by Galt McDermont, HAIR was the first rock musical. It is considered to be one of the most adventurous, outlandish, and ultimately profound musicals in musical theatre history. The groundbreaking rock score of HAIR paved the way for some of the greatest musicals of our time. HAIR features an extraordinary cast and dozens of unforgettable songs, including ‘Aquarius,’ ‘Let The Sun Shine In,’ ‘Good Morning, Starshine,’ ‘Easy To Be Hard,’ and of course, ‘Hair.” Kim Mytelka directs this production with musical direction by Joey Bernsen and choreography by Jennifer Daugherty. The Tribe includes: Dante Anderson, Manny Berry, Annkwinnette Bob, Kyle Crawford, Daniel Edwards, Steven Tyler Galindo, Justin Gonzalez, Trevor Grace, Cortney Hafner, Jordan Kearney, Sarah Myers, Caitlyn Mytelka, Matt Poole, Zachary Salcich, Whitney Williams, and Tara Jones Wright. Performances are Friday, March 9th through Saturday, April 7th. Performances are Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings at 8:00pm. There are two Sunday matinees on March 18th and 25th at 2:30pm. Although curtain times are either 8:00pm or 2:30pm, HAIR is not a traditional musical, so arriving fifteen minutes earlier will keep you from missing any of the ‘action.’ Tickets are $30.00 for adults and $25.00 for students and senior citizens. Tickets may be purchased online at www.islandetc.org. Special rates are available for groups of ten or more by calling the box office at 409-762-3556. (WARNING: The show includes simulated drug use and sexual acts, racial stereotypes and slurs of the era, profanity, partial nudity, defiance of authority, energy, love, and happiness. Island ETC does not recommend our production of HAIR for children.) Island ETC is located at 2317 Mechanic in Galveston. For any questions about group rates, this production or ETC, please call the box office at 409-762-3556 or visit us at www.islandetc.org. Come; break out your love beads and Let The Sun Shine In!
