Posted: 3/25/2010
JBFAN4EVER - Great interview! I've met Michael David at several Jersey Boys events and he's a very nice man. I saw this show in LaJolla before it even came to NYC and I've seen it so many times on Broadway and on tour that I've lost count. I definitely will continue to see this show, by myself, however I always manage to bring someone with me who HAS to see the show again once they've experienced it!! One can never get tired of it. I always leave the theatre with such a happy, uplifted feeling. All best to Michael, Lauren, all the casts and everyone involved with this wonderful show and may it play forever for generations to come.

Dorothy - He has this reputation of being sexist, abrasive and harassing. It is never a funny moment to spend when you are hired on one of the productions he directs. Even less since he got in charge of Wicked. The guy has a big ego, it is very well known and unfortunately true. Not really a secret to anyone. Rehearsals are a nightmare when he is in the room. I don't remember which show it was but once actors menaced to stop the rehearsals if he didn't leave the room. Looks like the story got repeated.

Teatromania Presents WEEKEND WITH A KILLER at the Abingdon Theatre 4/3-18 2010/03/22

Laurence Cantor - Vittorio Capotorto is a brilliant director. I've had the opportunity and honor to work with him as an actor twice in the past and found that his sense of theatricality, of what will move an audience, is uncanny and far better than my own. Our second go-around together also included a terrific young actor, Lucio Polosa, who many in New York will be seeing for the first time in "Weekend with a Killer"; they will be in for a great treat. His work is always simple and truthful even in the face of the broadest material that brings out the declaiming ham in most of us. I had the pleasure of working with Vittorio and assisting Maureen Gonzales on the translation of this play. It is by turns a beautiful, madcap, heart-rending, biting and very funny script and I look forward to seeing it performed with the greatest expectations.

Are women just supposed to lower their standards but receive just horny men in return? The show was funny and marketed well, but was hoping to learn more about relationships from both perspectives.

Kassie - "While some fans may find the mere idea of country-pop unappetizing, particularly Broadway fans whose sold exposure to the genre extends from BIG ROVER to 9 TO 5 and ends there..." I heartily disagree with that. Laura was what turned me on to country and I thank her every day for that. Country is like Broadway with the way they write their songs, and I almost regret not knowing about country music sooner. Longing For a Place Already Gone (Laura's debut album) was my first introduction to country. The first time I ever heard a song that wasn't a theatre song, and I'm not joking here, was when I heard "Fool Moon" for the first time. I adore Laura's music. Aside from that, this glowing review makes me so happy. Laura deserves success like this. People need to recognize all of that insatiable talent that she has.

Ed Beverly - Come prepared for the intimate surroundings of The Hermosa Beach Playhouse and to witness a presentation that will tug on your from every persepective of your emotional being - sorrow, joy, exultation, defeat - all met with resilience. You will walk away and ask, "Can I be that strong?" And the answer is, of course, "Yes you can, just give the same heart Clarinda shows us in this presentation." I am not a critic, I am only critical - my complaint here, James didn't offer me his hankie! Truly delightful and not to be missed. The team of Stephanie Coltrin, James Blackmun III, and Clarinda Ross didn't put on a show, it was a truly emotionally draining and rewarding experience. Ya simply gotta go!! Ed Beverly

dasboogiewoogie - Moin, Moin from Texas! If you like the Golden entertainment of the 1920s, you might like Brendan McNally's dark comic novel "Germania" (Simon & Schuster, 2009), about the Flying Magical Loerber Brothers, four somewhat magical, Jewish vaudeville entertainers and onetime child stars who were the toast of Berlin before WWII and who reunite during the surreal, three-week "Flensburg Reich" of Admiral Doenitz, Hitler's very unlucky successor.

@chefterridien - My dear Emma, amazing and incredible are synonyms. I agree with your opinion that they are all phenomenal; but as Jacqueline said, to each his/her own. That means: everyone on this public forum is entitled to his/her own opinion. You can say what you want about Teal and be as immature as you want about it but there are many many many people who disagree with you and support Teal Wicks in whatever she chooses to do.

@chefterridien - OK, so Emma, who would YOU suggest could take the role of MJ? I seriously dislike your tone. The purpose of this article and the ability to make comments was to express some form of support for performers who might be able to take the role of MJ - NOT to denigrate others' opinions and say unkind things about other people. You seriously have no idea what you are talking about. Show some respect and stop running on and on. You're just showing everyone what a negative person you are.

Emma - Yes, you can tell me that I'm a hater and whatever you guys want, but I'm not the only one, if you read what people posted in these message boards about her, would you be calling those people hater too? Is this your guys first time to see wicked? let me guess it is, and since probably Teal was the first Elphaba you saw, you guys all believe is a goddess and can't stand when people express their opinions. Producers: If I were you, I wouldn't risk it with her, probably once the show opens she's going to miss for months, or even miss the first preview, here's a thoughtful idea: cast the understudy/stand by into full role, since after all she's the one that will end up doing more shows that the lead one!!!

Emma - Oh my god!!!! I'm sorry, I didn't knew you were all her managers and were trying to find a job for her!!!!! Is this find a job for Teal day? or let me guess its lets tell all the fans to leave messages in her so Teal can be MJ day!!!! Yes, it's unfortune she got sick in the beggining and end of her run, just like she did in L.A. Yes, I know Elphaba is a demanding role, but honey have you seen all those actress that have played that role, for months even years and still are able to finish their run. I'm not saying it's her fault she got sick, but still she couldn't handle it. Yes, maybe at first she could handle the 8 shows a week, but later on she struggled, I know that she played certain days.

Dan - Emma it sounds like you haven't seen Teal perform but trust me she really is incredible. I've seen Wicked multiple times and except for her last appearance on the last day of February she was always there, giving it everything she has. I live and work in SF and I can also vouch that there was a bug going around SF around that final show. On Thursday (final show was Sunday) of that week I got a sore throat and my voice was horse (several people in my office called in sick on Fri) now I didn't lose my voice but I don't belt showtunes 3 hours a night either. Remember that Elphaba is one of the most demanding roles vocally in musical theater and very few people can do this role for around 2 years without needing an occasional break.

I mean Teal has the MJ looks: she's beautiful, pretty eyes, even her hair color (I believe) besides the fact that she so talented with the most gorgeous voice I've heard. Definetely will be a great choice for MJ!!!! Producer if you are reading contact her, you won't regret it!!! As for you Emme...as terri said if you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything, and since I have nothing nice to say to you, I won't say nothing at all!

@chefterridien - I second the nomination for Teal Wicks! She would be an excellent Mary Jane! As an avid follower of the Spiderman comic books, I can totally see Teal as MJ! Even the music for this production would be right up her alley - it's strong, fierce, intense with a dark side. I really hope she considers trying out for this role - perfect for her! As for Emma, I think you are a hater. If you have nothing nice to say, please don't say anything at all. Teal can handle it. She came back stronger and stronger - trust me, I was there to see her perform nearly 40 times in San Francisco.

@JacquelineTo - I guess to each her own. But just an FYI she was able to handle 8 shows for months and months and I was there so I know. And she can handle it. Elphaba is a demanding role and it's normal for a person to get sick even if I'm not an actress or I don't do 8 shows I do get sick too. For Teal it was just bad timing and it happened at the beginning and the end of her run. And it made people remember that but I think if some other Elphaba's get sick in the middle of their run then that wouldn't really matter or people won't even mention it. It was unfortunate and bad timing. But I understand as I said to each her own.

Mimi - Good Luck on your last week Lea! Just finished a run of Miss Saigon in my city. I'm honestly breathe taken from all the work we did and thankful that I got to experience a little bit of the show you did. God Bless and wished I could see your performance at the Carlyle.

Robo - The worst part of the show is the judges comments. Saying, "You chose the wrong song, your tone was pitchy, and you haven't had that wow moment yet is not constructive criticism. Nobody chooses the wrong song or sings off pitch on purpose. And Simon continually praises Crystal Bowersox, because he predicted her to win weeks ago. And, God forbid, Simon should ever be wrong.

Sara Holman - MTWorks is a wonderful company with a great track record -- such energetic, talented young professionals bringing new works to New York! I've seen readings of "Barrier Island" and it promises to be a terrific production -- funny, moving, thought-provoking with beautifully drawn characters. David Stallings is such a talented young playwright. Well worth your time and kind attention!

LOVE NEVER DIES Changes Likely Before Broadway Run 2010/03/11
Posted: 3/24/2010
Melissa - I agree with the believability issue as to the Phantom's complete transformation from murderer to "nice guy." While Beneath the Moonless Sky is one of my favorite songs of the show, the timing of the encounter - night before her wedding - and the nature of it, especially following the end of POTO, is alittle off. While I think a lot of people want them to be together sexually, I don't think a one night stand (especially making Christine unfaithful to her fiance) is appropriate. The title song of Love Never Dies is gorgeous and I definitely plan on seeing the show on Broadway. I don't think the end - at least the fact that Christine and the Phantom DO NOT end up together should be changed. Theirs is the picture of forbidden love, so to have them actually end up together would go against POTO and the original novel.

Bill Verigan - All of the performers were outstanding in this cabaret, great voices, great songs, a whole lot of fun. Sweet Caroline's puts you close to the stage with no obstructions, allowing interaction with the singers. I had never seen some of the young people, including Jay DeYonker and Kelli Barrett, onstage, and their performances made me want to see their movie.

Denis - The surprise captured was touching beyond belief. We so often make the mistake of honouring a composer or actor after they have passed on and to have had the forsight to do this as Stephen Sondheim celebrates his 80th Birthday is how it should be. For those who live in New York or for those like me outside of New York, when we visit and see this theatre it will stand as a testament to the love Broadway and the world feel for this remarkable composer and these wonderful photographs will also remind us of the joy this honour gave to him.

Patricia Kerns - Im also glad to see the upcoming younger actors! They're so talented!!! The show was so amazing this year! Everyone really impressed me with their talents you don't get to see on daytime tv! I also wanted to say that the young lady, Melanie, who did the skit was so fun to watch. If she can do drama as easily as acting in front of all those people, she would make a great addition to one of the shows!...If she isnt already on one?? Also, Natalie Hall (Colby) was so impressive! She should audition for an full Broadway show!
