Andy - We went last week and thoroughly enjoyed the even. Great performance by Susan Traherne but he quality of the supporting cast and the directing are what made the evening so memorable. Not to be missed.

Lindsay - Poor Anton! And as to Warlow- a dud, just look at all his no shows in Phantom. It's not as if he is a Nancye Hayes or a Reg Livermore, always on UNLESS they really have a broken leg. Just get over it folks, the Frost /Wharlow combo is dud combo! With a track record that goes back for years. And just maybe this all might be another of Frost's publicity stunts- just don't overlook that possibility.

Susan - I have to admit the marketing of the tickets has been poor as I bought tickets for the 'premiere' as a gift to friends and one for my mother who has known Anthony Warlow since his days in the Arcadians in Wollongong. I suspect dates for the red carpet premiere have been changed merely due to overseas producers (whom have the last say with this show going to Broadway) being delayed. I was there on Friday night with friends and family and was shocked to hear Anthony was injured. Like all of those seated. Continued...

Susan - After John Frost and Des McAnuff explained the situation to the audience, Anthony hobbled onto stage obviously in pain and on one crutch to state his disappointment in what happened. He is human after all! Some yelled 'show us your leg' others 'sing a song' to which Anthony with his good humour sang I'll be seeing you. And you know what shit happens sometimes especially when dealing with anything that is live. Thank goodness no animals or children were involved! So we had a preview of the preview. We enjoyed what was shown. Lucy Maunder is a star, Anton well done under extremely stressful circumstances. To the cast you sound great keep it up. The set design and costumes are superb. We enjoyed the bite and will be back for the meal. The reports I hear from those who attended Saturday night's performance and flew up from Melbourne were impressed and said they would see it again. To Anthony you know 'break a leg' is not meant to be taken literally! Please get well soon and we cannot wait to hear your dulcet tones once again caressing the stalls.

John - Not everyone lives in Sydney!! The Sydney hotels reap the benefits of the thousands of annual visitors attending live theatre in the city. Many of Friday evening's audience were such visitors to Sydney who planned their trip just to see Dr Zhivago. How do you think it feels to travel a long distance, plan transport and accommodation and organise things at home only to be confronted with the cancellation of such a show AND not because the lead performer had an injury BUT because there was no understudy who could take his place? Particularly for those of us who are not so young, it was more than alarming to be informed of the situation after taking our seat to watch the performance. It's not so easy for us to turn around and do this all over again, not to mention the expense! If we don't return to see the show then we have wasted our time and money in our attempt to visit the first show. It's not just another trip into the city for us. Why should we be stuck with this loss? Isn't it the responsibility of the producer? We were impressed with the short preview and would love to see the show but what are we to do now?

Cathy - Continued...... And, they mustn't have had a lot of confidence in their show for the producer and director to stand before the audience on Saturday afternoon and state that technical problems may cause breaks during the show. This had nothing to do with Anthony's accident. It was just more evidence that the show wasn't fully prepared to go ahead and it was very dampening to many of those attending that performance. I give full credit to the cast and crew for the success of the show that did follow. Anton was fantastic but he should never have been put into such a position. He had to pull a rabbit out of a hat! You wouldn't have believed that he wasn't prepared the night before which leads me to suspect that the real reason for the cancelled performance on Friday was more because of technical problems than because of the lack of a leading performer. Like Larraine, I too smell a rat. None of this should deter anyone from seeing the show. It is evident that the show is now in full swing but the Friday evening ticket holders deserve more than they have been offered to make up for their loss.

Kim - Anton was excellent from the start (Saturday matinee). I never meant to give the impression that he wasn't. But those who attended on Friday evening did not have the opportunity to see more than half an hour of the show because SUPPOSEDLY Anton had not fully rehearsed and did not know his lines etc. It's evident that Anton is nothing but a professional. If this was the true reason for the cancelled performance then it had to be a production fault. The producers have the responsibility to offer a fully functional show to each and every ticket holder and to have a fully rehearsed understudy ready to perform at the drop of a hat. My God!!!! It was the lead role!!!! What could they have been thinking! They must have been running well behind schedule in the production of the show to not allow time for the understudy to rehearse. pat thompson - I saw the show at Sunday's matinee and was MOST disappointed to hear of Anthony Warlow's non-appearance - I only booked because he was in it. However, Anton Berezin was excellent - he may have been 'iffy' earlier but not today - WELL DONE! get better soon Anthony Warlow, I'd love to see you and Anton on stage together - it would be sensational!

Amanda - I attended the Sunday matinee today (13/2) and thoroughly enjoyed it. As a long-time fan of Anthony Warlow's, since his early days with the Australian opera, I shared the disappointment of the majority of the audience when it was announced that Anthony could not perform. That said, Anton Berezin did a brilliant job as understudy. His voice has the "sound", if not the strength/power, of Anthony Warlow's and if I had not had the expectation of hearing Anthony's magnificant voice, I would not have been disappointed at all. There were no technical hitches that I noticed, and the voices of the rest of the cast, especially Lucy Maunder as Lara and Taneel Van Zyl as Tonia, were fantastic. The costumes and sets were impressive too. Regarding the "previews" - while I have been to many musicals over the years, I don't usually buy tickets at the beginning of a show's run, so I've never come across this issue. Like some others, I was surprised that the early shows are considered "previews", especially with such a short run in Sydney. When purchasing the tickets there was no distinction made and I was not aware until a couple of days ago today that the "opening night" is not for another week! I was under the impression that, extremely unfortunate injuries and/or illnesses aside, the show we were to see was going to be on par with a show put on in, say, 3 weeks' time. If there is a reasonable chance technical or other issues, then I don't think it reasonable to charge full ticket price. To sum up - in spite of Anthony Warlow's absence, I (and the two people I attended the show with) enjoyed the show very much; it's just surprising and a little disappointing that the "previews" weren't identified and priced accordingly.

Cathy - Most definitely unprofessional. You deserve full compensation for all your expenses. Don't allow them to get away with this. Their insurance company would surely agree to their incompetence and they would be lucky to be covered if a class action was to be taken against them. No prepared understudy!!!!!!! Would this have occurred in London or New York? The show is expected to gain international success but how can an audience have respect for the production when there is no respect given to the audience? It's robbery!

Al Pacino to Play Matisse in MASTERPIECE Film 2011/02/11

Emilie R. Hurley - I saw Merchant of Venice last December 10th. Mr. Pacino did a superb performance. I have always been in awe of his acting since I was 16 years old (The Godfather Part I). Now I am 53 and still have that feeling. His performance as Shylock was superb. Reading the play is one thing but seeing Shylock come to life and seeing Mr. Pacino as Shylock is quiet an unforgetable experience. Mr. Pacino can portray the role. Any role for that matter. He becomes that person... that character. Honestly, I do not think Marlon Brando (may his soul rest in peace) could have surpassed Mr. Pacino's talent in acting. I cannot wait to see Mr. Pacino play the role of Henri Matisse.

Kay - Anyone who had a good seat on Friday night will be very lucky to acquire an equally good seat when they re-book for another date. Many people booked many months in advance to be sure of having an excellent seat. I imagine the best seats for all dates were booked out long ago and many people, (especially those who must travel) may have limited dates on which they are available to attend again. Good luck and I hope you are all able to see Anthony, eventually. At least the hotels are doing well out of this. There should definitely be compensation for all additional costs occurred.

Mick - Afterall, the tickets had professional price tags attached. The audience should have been able to expect professional management of the show. These so called preview tickets were not discounted - perhaps that would have been a good idea. You should get what you pay for. I wouldn't dissuade anyone from attending the show. It was very good and will improve. It is the management/preparation of the show that ignites my complaint and particularly the lack of respect for the early audiences.

Mick - Not a single complaint???? Who were you talking to? The show was good, thanks to the cast but the preparation was lacking and and this very tentative situation should never have occurred. Accidents can happen but they should be prepared at all times to cater for these situations. It really was a fluke that Saturday's matinee was a success. Not only did they need to hurriedly prepare the understudy but they also warned the audience of possible technical difficulties. They were expecting problems and warned the audience of possible breaks in the show. It was a very off putting introduction to something many audience members had waited for and looked forward to for many months. As luck had it, all went smoothly and there may not have been complaints about the show itself but there were most certainly complaints about the lack of being fully prepared for any situation, be it cast, technical or otherwise. Unprofessional, to say the least - things could have so easily gone the other way on Saturday and we may have found ourselves equally as disappointed as the Friday evening audience.

Claire - I was there on Friday night with my husband and two friends. We purchased the tickets when they first went on sale in 2010, my son gave them to me as a birthday present. With accomodation at Star City booked I set off on Friday afternoon for what I thought and hoped was to be a wonderful night of entertainment with the wonderful Anthony Warlow. As you are all now aware Anthony could not perform and all we got was 30mins of the show. To say I was disappointed was an understatement!! We have taken the offer given to us on Friday night and have rebooked, but my worry is will Anthony be there to perform next time? Knowing my luck I doubt it! He wasn't there the night I went to see him in Phantom either :(( Anthony is you are reading this, could you please, pretty please try to make it for the 12th March 8.00pm????

Kim - I FULLY AGREE!!!!! We attended Saturday's matinee and I was extremely disappointed that Anthony Warlow would not be performing. However, the show did go on and Anton Berezin did do amazingly well under the circumstances. We can only be thankful that we did not purchase tickets for the Friday night performance. Having said that, it did anger me when we were informed that we were attending a preview show and that technical problems could result in the show be stopped. When purchasing the tickets there was no mention of preview or pre-show. If this is the case it should be made clear during the purchase of tickets and the tickets should be sold at a reduced price. Why should we pay the same price for a 2nd rate showing! I purchased the best tickets as a gift and we also travelled quite some distance, each from different locations. This took a lot of organising, planning and expense.

Kim - There are some smart remarks posted here about experienced theatre goers knowing that there are many preview performances before opening night but that does not excuse the fact that we are being sold "shoddy goods" AT FULL PRICE and that this should be disclosed before the purchase of tickets is finalised. Circumstances prevented us from being able to attend a performance later in the season but we may have preferred not to attend at all if we had realised that we were attending a 'REHEARSAL"! The fact is that the show was not fully prepared to open. Technical problems had not been fully ironed out nor were understudies prepared to step in if necessary. Whatever happened to "THE SHOW MUST GO ON"? The first show should be just as prepared as the last show as long as the audience is paying full price. I fully agree that Friday evening's audience are well within their rights to open a class action to recover all expenses incurred. You were certainly duped!! Telling you that "I will be fine for opening night" was a slap in the face and would have been better left unsaid.

I saw Ethel Merman in GYPSY, way back when, and she was tired and gave it her all but was not able to belt the way we all expected her to and the audience knew it and forgave her anyway because we knew she was human and we all loved the show. The audience was talking about Ms. Merman's fatigue (sympathetically, I might add) on the way out of the theatre. So even the marvelous Ethel Merman could have used a mic once in a while. Twas first Broadway musical I ever saw.

broadwaycritic - It's because these critics want to be spotlighted on a national level and everyone is giving it to them! Brantley on "The Today Show" - seriously. It's ridiculous.

Paciano - Oh boy. The "Flowers" duet occurred at the 1980 Grammy Awards, NOT the 1977 Grammy Awards. By the way, you may also want to show the 1981 awards show, where she felt so publicly guilty with Barry Gibb on stage (they won that night, though not televised).

BWW Reviews: ROCK OF AGES at the Paramount 2011/02/09

Jodi Sherrell - Saw the show at the Parmount last night and loved it! Constantine was spot-on as both the shy and awkward busboy and the full on rocker. Rebecca did a fantastic job as Sherri. My favorite (besides the music of course) had to be Patrick Lewallen as Lonny. He was hilarious! Great performance but a wonderful ensemble of actors and singers. So glad that I went! Thanks for the trip down memory lane as I saw many of those songs performed by the originals bands at the Paramount years ago.

maudie - Help! We have been trying for 8 months to get someone to remodel our bathroom. One licensed contractor said $6500 but he really did'nt have the time because he does so much insurance remodeling work, another unlicensed guy quoted $12,000 so he obviously doesn't want the job either. We had another guy who never got back to us. Where are all the people who need work. We need help and I'm just tired and we haven't even got started.

Sylvia - I've just seen the full show with the understudy - Anton, and although there were complaints when it was announced that Anthony Warlow would not be performing, there was not a single complaint after the show. Anton was fantastic, the story and songs were instantly soul-touching, the scenery was brilliant, and for once the Lyric theatre was able to sustain the feel and emotion of a stand-out musical. Hats off to Anton, well done to composer and direction, I was impressed that Lyric Theatre could pull it off (often in the past lacked in sound quality/atmosphere), get better to Anthony but in the meantime full support to Anton - you rock. Loved, loved, loved Lucy and the rest of the crew. Really appreciate being part of the experience!!

Annie - Media theatre is all about creating opportunities not found elsewhere in Delaware County for our youth ... Yes , children from all walks of life are welcomed and embraced by the nurturing staff's unwavering dedication to the dramatic arts education ... Jesse has an excellent ability to hand pick the talent from local as well as NY , CA audition rooms to bring the finest caliber of Broadway to State Street .. Many local Delco natives have been blessed to be touched by the caring staff of this amazing place they call Media Theatre ... There are numerous youth who have gone on to Barrymore , Broadway , Major Motion Picture Recognition and endless successes .. I'm grateful for the opportunity I've had to be a supporter as well as patron of this Theatre

SPIDER-MAN Seeks Feedback from Focus Groups 2011/02/11

Anne-Marie - No sense at all. Overall - I see why this show is tricky and expensive - but why they haven't invested $10.000 out of the many millions to hire a dramaturg to clean up the plot-mess and secure the cake to put all the icing on - that I don't get....focus groups who see a half show?! What good's to come of that?

Warlow Injured, First DOCTOR ZHIVAGO Performance Cancelled 2011/02/11

Brian - I saw the matinee show today as well. I specially took my 87 year old mother who enjoys seeing Anthony Warlow. Yes, she was terribly disappointed he couldn't perform. However, the show was still very good. The singing, acting and sets were very good. The understudy, Anton Berezin was excellent. Certainly a great effort to comfortably replace Warlow. It will be interesting to see when the star returns....a torn calf can take time to heal. Let's hope it's a quick recovery and Anthony has a good stretch before going on stage next. Two other things. They didn't let us in (stalls) until 15 minutes before the show started. Many people waited from 1.30pm, it became very crowed. Lots of elderly people starting to get tired on their feet. They need to open those doors at least 25-30 minutes before the show. The other thing, the Lyric Theatre is not really a good venue for live theatre. The Capitol Theatre is the best theatre to see live shows. It is far superior than the Lyric. Surely if we want to attract more tourists and have more big live shows in Sydney we need to build another live theatre venue with a capacity of at least 3,000-4,000. Sydney seems to play second fiddle on most cases to Melbourne.

Lauren - Saw the matinee show today. For the first full run through infront of an audience, the cast and crew did a spectacular job. Apart from the odd forgotten line, and sound issues (which got better as the show progressed), the show ran very smoothly for a preview screening. ANd Warlow's understudy, Anton Berezin did amazingly well learning the lead part in 24 hours. The audience went crazy for him during the curtain call. And anyone interested in live theatre should know that the first performance is never opening night, but instead the first of many preview performances to test actors, sound, lighting and book infront of an audience. No one was "misrepresenting the facts" and the show's website clearly stares that February 19th is the World Premiere. Please hold off the judgement until you've seen the show. It was pretty darn good considering, and it would suck if negative reviews scared others away from seeing this beautiful show.

Nichole - The choreography of the dances, the voices of the cast and overall acting was very good. Very disappointed with the creative license that changed the whole story line and idea. The new story has taken a perfectly balanced original script that was about two people from different worlds that together make it work. Instead it became a story of a young girl who is irrational, insecure, and willing to throw away her identity for a boy that was screwing around with other girls. Sandy fights with Rizzo, Danny is all over the place with the girls, Finally Danny quits track never earns the letter. The addition of a variety of songs that the cast sung beautifully was a creative and refreshing addition. This also allowed each cast member to show their talent. The main question is why would you diminish such a great original story? We felt sorry that such talented cast got stuck in a bad script.

Larraine Ladd-Hudson - Disapointed? Yes. We were there because on opening night we were assured it would be Anthony Warlow...how surreal. No Anthony Warlow...and apparently no opening night. When we purchased tickets in October 2010, we were led to believe that this was to be the world premiere. Not only was it not the world premiere but the injured Anthony Warlow told the disappointed, and literally, captive audience, that "I will be fine for opening night". What was this then? When is opening night? Why do I feel duped? I acknowledge that Anthony was injured, but the understudy was not ready and we were left wanting. The whole thing looks shady and unfortunately less professional that I would have hoped. The offer of a refunded ticket does not take into account accommodation, parking and travelling. Let this be known...at no time was this promoted as a pre-show. I submit that this amounts to a fraudulent misrepresentation of the facts and many theatre goers are well within their rights to a class action to recover ALL the costs incurred in attending this non-event. Producers....you have moved the goal posts. Very sad for Anthony and the producers...not a good start.

anon - Of all people, why was Leann Rimes there? She knows nothing about charity as evidenced by the fact that she she continues to use twitter as a means to taunt a mother with her own kids and stage photo-op after photo-op where she gloats about the outcome of her affair with another woman's husband. She continues to flash that ring knowing full well that it came at the expense of two kids. Shouldn't charity begin with Dean, Brandi, and Eddie Cibrian's kids? She shows no remorse for her actions and continues to shove her distasteful relatiosnhip with that cheater down everyone's throats. Did you see how Leann and her mouthpieces are making it about her. One media outlet (Dailymail) even turned into a commentary on what Leann would be wearing to her wedding to Eddie and the other media(Just Jared) outlet forgot about Barbara S as if she as just an afterthought. Based on those media outlets, you would have thought that Leann did the show all about herself. This is why Leann should not have been included. Charity is just a means for Leann to stage pda photo-ops with Eddie Cibrian. Or even worse, she will release those "sexy" photos from her and EC photoshoot in Cabo.

mel - An astonishing play. Challenging to stage, perform, and keep track of. Very interesting to see. The staging and performances are brilliant. But not for people with short attention spans. And the plots are variously romantic, banal, dramatic and fantasy. It is a different night out.

Sharn - I thought under studies were to fill the role when the lead performers could not... hmmm... the under study didn't know all his lines????? most unprofessional as was the curtin fall. The original Movie was my first date with my husband 45 years ago and we were very disappointed as the Encore show tickets were given to us as a gift and I feel let down after they paid oveer $450 with no Russian Tea Room, No Free Drinks ( Bar Closed) not to mention the extra cost of travel from Port Stephens and Overnight Star City accommodation etc.
