RIALTO CHATTER: Streisand to Direct, Produce & Star in GYPSY Film? 2011/01/05

SVRB - I think Barbra has learned a lot about herself since the Yentl years. I do know one thing about Yentl - she sang the hell out of the score.! I've always wanted her to sing the score from Gypsy! I hope she knocks it out of the park!

Mark - Don't get me wrong, I adore Barbra, but the problem with all of her films is that they are essentially "ego productions", as one reviewer coined them. Think about it in Yentl, Streisand, the actress did not have to contend with disputing screenwriters (in that case), directors or producers, as she filled all those roles. The same with Prince of Tides and Mirror Has Two Faces. I am having trouble seeing her as a Mama Rose, however - she might surprise me however! If this did come to pass (as the Rob Marshall-mooted Catherine Zeta Jones vehicle did not), I'd like if Barbra strayed from the source material in her version - the first two films were crushingly faithful, although I, myeslf, much prefer the Roz Russell version - I love her performance, Merman comparisons nonwithstanding and I love the slight alterations (eg the voice-over, New York, rather than LA, etc)...

bill goulding - I met her Jill Haworth several times when she was doing CABARET at the BROADHURST. Jill was a doll. Besides being beautiful, she was a kind, generous, charming and sincere human being (so lost these days in theatrical circles) who just got better and better as "Sally" in the show. Rest in peace you lovely lady.

Maddie - I find it very hypocritical that the homosexual community is raising money to fight a disease that they themselves have caused . If you were a diabetic working to cure diabetis, would you sit down and eat a pie ? If you really want to cure aids, stop having sex. I know homosexuals do not want to hear that but lets be realistic aids started with perversion and it is perversion that keeps aids running rampant in the homosexual community. There is a way to a man that seems right but in the end it brings death.

Maria - That would be great ! I hope to see Gypsy on Broadway . Barbra Streisand is one of my favorite artists I remember she made a great work as an actress , director and producer in the movie ¨ The Prince of Tides ¨ . I will never forget it because this movie describes exactly not only : what and how psychopathogies inside a dysfunctional family develops, but also how resilience arises to cope with adversity !

Chris Gibson - This comment is incorrect. I covered and posted reviews for Man of La Mancha, Proof, Master Class and This Wonderful Life. I missed On the Verge and wasn't allowed to see The Country Girl because seats were not available on the night I was able to cover the show. Actually, if you compare what I cover to most of the other critics in town, including the Post, you'll find that I cover more shows and more companies.

Margaret Piatt - On Monday, I had an urge to call Marsha to ask her advice on a project. As I picked up the phone, I had an overwhelming sense that I should leave her alone. I did not call her. Consequently, I was stunned when I heard the news of her passing - that very day. It was as if she said, "Work it out yourself, Margaret. I'm moving on." Although I did not have the opportunity to work on a production with Marsha, I had several meaningful conversations with her over the last decade. I felt an energy and an intensity from her that touched me. I can only imagine what it must have felt like to connect with her in a production and as a friend. I do know what it was like to connect with her as an audience member. I will be forever glad that I saw August: Osage County and exposed a group of 30 students to that outstanding produciton and Marsha's artistry. My heart is breaking for all and especially for Kevin and Scott. Good-bye Marsha. You were here too short of a time but in that time, you affected so many. You were an outstaning member of the human race. I hold your inspiration in my heart.

Award-Winning Cabaret Singer David Gurland Dies 2010/12/30

carol ann leibner - I got to know David on the phone through the Patron Desk at Carnegie Hall. We finally met in person for the first time recently and had a wonderful pre-holiday lunch together. I felt the need to meet this wonderful person who always treated me as if I were special and who always went the extra mile to accomplish whatever was asked of him.. Besides all that, we had wonderful chats about so many subjects. I was looking forward to hearing him in person as I joked that I was going to make him autograph his CD's. I think I am still in shock but I wanted his loved ones and friends to know that others (almost strangers) picked up on what a down to earth, humble, funny and talented young man he was. May he rest in peace and grace a heavenly stage. I only wish that he had had more time to "improve" our world. I feel blessed to have been able to meet this exceptional young man. I won't soon forget him. May his memory be for a future blessing for his family. Carol Ann Leibner

Bob MacClennan - Marsha was the ZENITH of what a theatre person should be. My love for her and the respect that I always felt for her theatre work and ethics are difficult to express. I must paraphrase a pretty good writer in saying, ' Now cracks a noble heart. Good night, sweet Princess, and flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.' There is no nobler comment I can make. Mac

Matt Diehl - I was very sad to read Adrianne's post on Facebook this morning that Marsha passed. I was lucky to work with her as an actor in "Resident Alien" at HRT a bit more than 10 years ago. Even though we weren't able to get on exactly the same page with that project (I assumed the problem was mostly mine, not Marsha's) I never lost great respect for her as an artist and admiration for her as a graceful person. My wife and I were happy to know her, delighted to work with her, and are very sorry she's gone.

@willhutcheson - Her educational out reach programs and continued artistic richness in the community are apparent in Dayton. I first met her when I was 14 and she really helped inspire me to become an actor in the first place. Now I have a college degree in it and am doing just that. I can't even really think how different my life would've been without her. She will be sorely missed by all of the artistic community in Dayton.

When an audience was treated to Marsha before a show, backstage we were happy because we knew she'd liven them up even before we did anything. I love that lady.

Adrianne Cury - What a dear lady, extraordinary talent and all-around great human being. Dayton's lights just got a bit dimmer. I was honored to play L'il Bit in How I Learned to Drive back in '99, and as the Artistic Director, she made sure that I was comfortable enough away from home to dive right in to a very demanding role.
