Shelley Miller - I couldn't leave the country either - not even for Sondheim - be an honorable daughter of an elderly parent. Shame on anybody for judging that. If she IS a diva? - which by most accounts she is now - she's in a long line of divas so who cares? Are we so cynical we can't just say... good for her for being a good daughter? Because YES that role is like winning an Oscar. Read more: /pulse/viewblog.cfm?blogi...

Zanna - I hope you do get to revisit LA CAGE again soon. Saw the show for the first time ever this past weekend and was blown away with happiness watching the fun on stage. PERFECT! Belly laffs for three "straight" hours. Audience was ecstatic with enjoyment and spontaneously raving about the show during intermission. (THIS is the true test of how good a show really is.) And raving even more at the end. Kelsey is gorgeous with beautiful voice; Doug is going full throttle and beyond fabulous. Entire cast is superb. And, for me (and a great deal of the audience from what I heard) a new star was born: SEAN PATRICK DOYLE played the Jacob role on Sunday and a SIZZLING star he is! And just like that I have a new favorite. :) And the stand-up before the show is doing a fantastic job. Love it all! Love Broadway!!!

JMC - Saw the play Saturday night. It was amazing on so many different levels. The set was incredible and rivals a Broadway production rather than an Off-Broadway. The writing is smart, funny, and intense. You are kept at the edge of your seat for the entire performance. First time playwrite Tommy Nohilly is a talent to be reckonded with and weaves a dramatic story about a blue collar family in CT. Ann Dowd as Margaret is passionate and believable as the matriarch, sacrificing her life for her children. Gordon Clapp as Bill is quiet and cruel and his performance as the 'unknowing-yet-controlling' father is spot on. You love to hate him. Ethan Hawk plays Travis and dispite all his unwise choices you route for him to escape the chaos of his own life, but first hug his father, and rescue his mother. Performancse by Daphne, Natasha and Thomas round out an intense cast and keep the flow real. You leave the theater feeling tired and overwhelmed which mirrors the family so they definitely invite you in and make you a vital part of the drama. Bravo!

JMC - Everyone should be able to identify with one character in the play or has someone in their lives that mirror these brillant performances. You truly believe these characters are real and are a looking through a mirror into their lives.

Mare - I think its a mistake that Barbra take this role on BUT as along as she is, then Laura Benanti should play Louise. You shouldn't have 2 big name stars in this movie. Laura IS big on Broadway and did a FANTASTIS job in the role. I don't think Streisand and Hathaway is a good mix.

Everyone in the cast received a rousing ovation upon their appearance on stage...and everyone in the cast gave the performance of their lives...especially was the darling Andrea Burns who just soared with her stage savvy and double takes and those top notes were just fab and brought down the house. Anyone in the audience that night will never forget it...it was a love fest between the actors and audience. Lin, Chris, Olga,Marcy, Priscilla, Tony C, Doreen, Shaun, Seth, Marcos, Michael B, Rosie, and the rest of you wonderful actors were just marvelous....you all absolutely super!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Broadway Moms Part 2: I Want it All Kind Of Featuring Kerry Butler 2011/01/10 Page 1

Coggie - It doesn't matter if you're a working actress on Broadway, a waitress single mom or a stay-at-home mom, raising children is hard and rife with choices. I think most of us make those choices and sacrifices in the privacy of our souls, then get on with it. I personally don't think anyone can have it all. But I do agree that a balance can be achieved, with one world informing the other, as Kerry Butler discovered for herself. I had the pleasure of watching her help try out the new "Catch Me If You Can" musical out in Seattle a few years ago before it hit Broadway. And, further back, of watching her in an all-too-brief soap opera role of a misunderstood villainess on ONE LIFE TO LIVE. My hat is off to her, however she is making this all work.

Metro Theater Company and the Edison at Washington University Present THE GIVER 1/7-23 2011/01/07

Mark - I took my 11 year old niece to the play. Both of us had read the novel and were excited about the performance. An admittedly difficult novel to adapt for the stage, the production succeeded in its effective use of lighting and creative, mood-setting sound-effects. Unfortunately, these impressive efforts could not compensate for unfortunately miscast role of the Giver, and some poor directorial choices. Both my niece and I were incredibly disappointed, but were able to agree upon the following three points of criticism. The story of The Giver is incredibly dense. While Lois Lowry's novel succeeded in establishing a richly imagined world with sparse language, the play rushes through the many layers of detail so rapidly that the audience lacks time to digest the material. No sooner does one scene end then the next begins. The pace is set by the repetitive chime of a bell, but rather than building tension than lack of transition from one scene to the next leaves the audience little time to consider the images they witness on stage. With such thought-provoking material, it would seem wise to allow the weighty dialogue and dramatic content time to breath in the minds of viewers before hopping to the next scene. Perhaps most troublesome is the choice to play The Giver as a warm, grandfatherly teacher. A far cry from the haunted, cynical, and emotionally distant character of the novel, the stage version of the Giver warms to Jonas immediately. It is as though the actor had not read the source material, or else gave little consideration to how such an individual would inevitably be traumatized by the failure of the previous attempt to replace him. (I'll spare the details for those who haven't read the novel, but anyone familiar with the book will recognize that the Giver would be forgiven for having a thick coat of armor preventing him from getting close to Jonas.) Most infuriating is the delivery of one pivotal line of dialogue spoken by the Giver to Jonas, a line revealing the identity of another character. On opening night, the actor delivered this line as casually as though announcing the time of day. The effect was jarring only in that it failed to have any impact or gravity whatsoever. Another mistake in direction was the choice to have Jonas alone on stage for the final ten minutes of the play. While the young actor handles himself well, it is simply too much to ask a sixteen year old to carry the final scenes of a play, unaccompanied. The young boy alone on stage, in the spotlight, is reduced to a narrator describing to the audience what he experiences. While there is some nice visual work suggesting the emotional blizzard the character endures, far more could have been done to assist an actor who otherwise appears to have been left to his own devices to solicit an emotional response to a by then restless audience. The director proved creative in his depiction of an elephant on stage; why not do the same to show the audience the deer Jonas is seeing, rather than have Jonas simply tell the audience "I see deer"? It is worth mentioning again that there is much to praise about the play. Some creative use of scenery, impressive use of lighting, and the resourceful, mood-setting sound effects created by the clearly talented musician. However, the false beats set by the Giver's performance, and the awkward, too-rushed setting make the play come across as an inferior adaptation of a superior piece of fiction.

BWW Reviews: DON GIOVANNI: A NEW MUSICAL at Seattle Musical Theatre 2011/01/10

Truth must prevail - Who ever posted the first comment glorifying this production must have been either a mother or very dedicated friend. In either case, truth must prevail. Telling performers they were "excellent" when they truly weren't is rude and detrimental to their growth as young artists. The character work was unspecific and unmotivated, thus the acting I witnessed was untruthful and disconnected to the work. True, most of the singing was good, but a beautiful voice does not make a character compeling. Bravo for the beautiful musi composition as Jesse Smith truly is a VERY talented composer. But he should strive to find a better method to cohesively tell a story.

I would like to make it clear that Miss Vivino withdrew only because a movie committment interferred with the performance schedule. She regrets having to leave the project and we are extremely disappointed that she must leave but understand and are thrilled for her and the film role. The extremely talented Megan Thomas who was last seen off-Broadway in Memopause, The Musical and who has toured Nationally with Beauty & The Beast, Cats and Hello Dolly has taken over the role of Clarisa, the Country Mouse in a show which I am extremely pleased to state I supplied the book and lyrics. And, I am honored to have this show come to life 'with a jubilant and joyful score' by John Stutte.

Review Roundup: LOVE NEVER DIES- Revised 2010/12/22

Bric - Most of the Times re-review is negative, but Maxwell concludes by saying " Once it gets over its initial unlikeliness, Love Never Dies is staged and performed with flair and heart. Sometimes it’s silly. But it’s never dull." Not exactly high praise, but he did see some improvement. I read recently that both CamMac and ALW/RUG made money last year so LND version 3.0 might wander into NYC sometime after Australia. I think the composer will keep spending money on it so long as he sees any chance it can survive.

Unknown - Don't these two bastards (Trey Parker and Matt Stone) have anything more creative to do than to create a musical that WILL ultimately insult the theology, beliefs, and practices of The Church of Jesus Christ Latter-Day Saints! Why do these two whores insist on offending those who practice a religion that they must disagree with! I hope I am wrong and that this musical will show SOME modicum of respect and dignity. If not, I hope ALL those who do see it will at least have the dignity to acknowledge just how undignified Trey Parker and Matt Stone really are. I am apposed to abortion, BUT when I think of these two a$$holes, I am all for it! Trey and Matt, F@%K YOU and F@%K the whores that gave birth to you two! Don't you just love free speech!

BWW Reviews: DON GIOVANNI: A NEW MUSICAL at Seattle Musical Theatre 2011/01/10
Posted: 1/10/2011
Disappointed - I couldn't agree more with everything the reviewer had to say. The storytelling was incoherent, something that can't be covered up by a few nice melodies. Most of the time, it was made worse by the piano pounding over the singers. The quality was far below the other shows I've seen this season at Seattle Musical Theater. When I asked about it, I was told that the theater's involvement in Don Giovanni was as host, not production. Thank goodness, because the $30 I wasted on this show was compounded by the incredibly short length. I'll wager that the previous comment comes from one of the handful of audience members that must have had friends involved or the woman who tried to get me to buy a video of the show. No thanks, I lived through it once and that was enough. Seattle Musical Theater, I'll be back for the next real show. If it's as good as Chicago and Camelot, maybe the people involved in Don Giovanni should come for a master class.

a guest - from an english literature background, i disagree with the reviewer’s criticism that storytelling devices in opera very different from musical theater” or that "...the show lacks a focused & coherent structure." the reviewer doesn’t explain how the storytelling devices differ, but great storytelling in any form is never limited to ironclad devices. in my opinion, jesse smith has accomplished a remarkable don giovanni a new musical. i found it beautifully structured with the framing of the servant leporello's baring his philandering boss don giovanni through the progression as he descends into hell for his wronging of the 3 women--victim, wife, & lover & the effect it has on their family, friends, & loved ones. the characters did not "appear out of nowhere, sing a solo number, & then disappear forever..." each of the 9 major players, resurrected from mozart's opera, was introduced in turn; then joined the subsequent scenes with their characters beautifully developed in the music, lyrics, acting, choreography, costuming, sets, & staging; & all were present @ the finale. mozart would have approved the young ages & voices of the musicians & actors. bach would have admired the fugues. beethoven would have heard the false codas. shakespeare & disney would cast don giovanni as the tragic figure & leporello as the comic relief: their voices & interpretations were spot on, as were every actor's in the cast. audiences will find exquisite music, smart explanatory lyrics, superb acting, magnificent direction, & stunning choreography, set design, sound design, & lighting design at don giovanni a new musical by jesse smith. bravo to all & especially to jesse smith, seattle’s newest & possibly youngest musical theater composer.

ALW - How do you take a gray, drab dystopian world without color and turn it into a captivating, sensory rich theatrical performance? Apparently by giving Eric Coble's stage adaptation of Lois Lowry's book The Giver to Metro Theatre Company. Coble stayed true to the book, yet even those familiar with the story will feel so connected to the characters that they will lean forward with concern when Jonas is skipped during the ceremony of 12's and gasp in surprise when the gray apple turns red in mid air. The impressive use of sound and light enhanced Jonas' receipt of each memory - including a moving 'elephant' and a red sled, as well as the more subtle sounds of winter snow storms and a burning hot sun. The audience, like Jonas, experienced family, war, and love as if for the first time through the magic of Nicholas Kryah's moving performance. Overall, this was a beautiful and powerful performance appropriate for all ages.

I tell you Ty really seems to look for the most "extreme" people....I just can not understand why they can not just build modest homes for any of these people, it just seems such a waste.....................

And yeah, I heard the participants went to that weight loss spa Hilton Head Health  (http://www.hhhealth.com/). From the previews, H3 looks super pretty.

BWW TV Farewell Flashback: A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC x2 2011/01/08
Posted: 1/10/2011
Sal Mistretta - Thought it was a grand effort enhanced by the luminous Angela Lansbury. She singlehabdedly brought you into the realm of the plays time. I didn't get to see Zeta Jones or Bernadette. Other than that I felt it left out so much of the elegance and beauty of the sterling Original. Doing older pieces in a new form is certainly admirable IF it serves the piece as originally intended. I felt this version was lacking in a lot of what the original served you in abundance. I feel so priviliged to have seen the original versions of NIGHT MUSIC, COMPANY, FOLLIES , and SWEENEY TODD. I feel that generations will have only this version to draw from and although it had merits was pale in comparison to the lush and glorious original. I missed the orchestrations do very much.
