Actors' Equity Association Announces Tax Seminar Tour

Actors' Equity Association Announces Tax Seminar TourActors' Equity Association announced today that it will hold a series of tax seminars for actors and stage managers across the country, featuring Sandra Karas, Equity's Treasurer, a working actor, licensed tax attorney and Chair and Director of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program. The announcement comes as hundreds of Equity members gathered for the first day of VITA appointments at Equity's New York Office.

The tour kicks off this week with a stop in Chicago on Thursday, February 8. Additional stops, including a virtual tax seminar for members who cannot attend in person, will follow in St. Paul (Feb. 10), Los Angeles (Feb. 15), San Francisco (Feb. 17), New York (Feb. 26), Orlando (Feb. 27), Washington, D.C. (Mar. 1) and Philadelphia (Mar. 5).

The seminars will help members learn what to organize, how to keep records and what's required in an audit. Karas will also discuss the rules for filing 2017 returns as well as what to expect for 2018 under the new law.

To prepare for the seminar, members should print a copy of the 2017 VITA worksheet and bring it to the seminar along with all questions.

Equity was active during the debate over the "Tax Cuts and Jobs Act," warning that the bill would unfairly punish members by eliminating deductions for ordinary and necessary business expenses. Those changes will take effect next tax season. For more information on how the new tax law will hurt members of the entertainment industry, click here.
