Pour survivre, il doit s’humilier en s’exposant au regard des curieux qui payent pour s’épouvanter devant ce « monstre ». Frederick Treves est quant à lui un brillant chirurgien et devient, à 31 ans, professeur d’anatomie à l’hôpital de Londres. Lorsqu’il aperçoit Merrick pour la première fois, il désire absolument étudier ce cas si étrange et le rescape de la pauvreté pour l’installer à l’hôpital. Sous sa protection, Merrick se voit enfin offrir la chance de vivre une vie normale. Témoignant d’un esprit d’une grande finesse, il étonne et devient la coqueluche de la haute société qui le visite.
