Experience one of the most powerful plays of the last fifty years at Lyric Arts’ production of RENT. 2014 marks the 20th anniversary of the off-Broadway debut of this Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize winning musical. Set in the East Village of New York City, RENT is about falling in love, finding your voice and living for today.

Director Matt McNabb is thrilled to be involved in one of the most important plays of the 20th century. “The phrase that kept coming to mind is ‘cultural landmark.’” said McNabb, on the topic of RENT. “It won tons of Tony Awards, it won the Pulitzer prize for drama, and I feel that the power of RENT transcends theater; it touches on all aspects of American culture and art.”

Matt McNabb is a seasoned director at Lyric Arts, previously directing plays such as Pirates of Penzance, The Mousetrap, Footloose, Cabaret, and last Summer’s hit romantic comedy Barefoot in the Park, and he is eager to help us produce RENT this season. “This is a show that defined the end of the 20th century. This is a show that defined an entire generation of people,” Said McNabb. “It’s a very brave and exciting choice for this year’s final play, and I am so proud and honored to be a part of it.”

Over the last two decades, RENT has become a pop cultural phenomenon with songs that rock and a story that resonates with audiences of all ages. Based loosely on Puccini’s La Boheme, Jonathan Larson’s RENT follows a year in the life of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York’s Lower East Side.

Tickets range from $17-$26 and are available online at www.lyricarts.org or by calling the box office at 763-422-1838.

Ages: Recommended for ages 15 and older for frank sexuality and adult situations.
