WVC JAZZ: WVC, Malaysia’s premier jazz ensemble, returns with a series of concerts entitled Music In Words. The show, spanning a series of five concerts over three nights, will feature a unique collection of WVC’s exhaustive repertoire each day.
On August 23rd, WVC presents their first ballad and love song concert, featuring new compositions, new arrangements, and also some of the favourites WVC has come to be known by. Featuring Chong KeatAun and Izen Kong.
August 24 will feature the return of a pioneer project by WVC, Listen to the Wind Sing: Murakami and Jazz. This show will include original works composed by bandleader Tay Cher Siang, drawing inspiration from his avid connection with Murakami’s works since being a teenager. The show will also feature WVC’s interpretation of some of the music Murakami himself quotes and draws inspiration from in his works.
The show will begin with an 11am movie screening of the film Burning, a South Korean psychological drama inspired by one of Murakami’s short stories from The Elephant Vanishes. Burning was the first Korean movie to make it to the 91st Academy Awards shortlist for Best Foreign Language Film and has garnered attention in film festivals all over the world.
Later in the day WVC will take the stage with their music with accompanying narration by Ye Hui, translator and researcher of Murakami's works. This Chinese language version showcasing will be at 3pm, and an English counterpart at 8pm, featuring reading and narrations by Gareth Richards and Bettina Chuah Abdullah of Gerakbudaya and Hikayat.
Then on August 25th, WVC once again presents yet another pioneering project entitled If Music be the Food of Love, Jazz On! In 2016, on the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, WVC embarked on a journey to create a swathe of musical works inspired by the bard. Putting music to sonnets, creating music inspired by evocative scenes from some of Shakespeare’s most famous plays, WVC staged a highly acclaimed show in KLPAC and is set to bring this series of music to the stage once more.
Joining them are Lim Soon Heng of Shakespeare Demystified, and Aaron Teoh who is taking a break from his stint with the London production of The King and I.
