The Flying Dutchman is a cursed sailor condemned to eternal wandering, unless ... Every seven years, he has the right to dock in a port to try to find the woman whose love the unwavering finally liberate, offering a consoling death.

The term of seven years is again happened. In this small town there, Doland, a greedy father, offered to sell his daughter, Senta, marine cursed. Just Senta and the Dutchman, they saw an intense passion between them. But Erik, Senta's fiance, does not hear well. Finally, after twists and misunderstandings, the girl throwing herself into the water, sacrificing releases the Dutch and joined in death. They are united for eternity.

After Lohengrin, Parsifal and Ring Saga - not to mention Wagner Dream by Jonathan Harvey - Richard Wagner is back at the Grand Theatre, this time with his first great opera, where it begins to clearly affirm his great personality, Der fliegende Holländer or The Flying Dutchman (Wagner initially wrote the libretto in French).

The work is already highly Wagnerian in its theme of wandering and redemption through love, in the complex significance of the feminine figure. But it is also musical outbursts of happiness in his descriptions (the initial storm, "the wind hits you in the face"), in his moments of intense expressiveness revealing (the "Ballad of Senta").

Alexander Schulin opted for the original version of 1841, has designed the Paris Opera, without ever being shown, which happens in Scotland and not in Norway, and in which the father's name is Donald and fiancé Georg. What he wanted in his direction, and that affects the images and conduct, is to live the whole story either from an external point of view, but in the head of Senta.

"Fleshy, even insolent face everest the ardor of the young Wagner concocted it, the voice of the young Ingela Brimberg amazes outset and there are fears - quite wrongly - for the trip up to the ultimate flight. This Senta barefoot everywhere in the opening powerfully embodied with his desire to fight both vocally and physically resonate long in our memories. The young Dutchman Alfred Walker surprised as well. ResMusica

"The plateau offers [...] incomparable joys dominated [...] by Senta Flaming Ingela Brimberg. Stamp glorious over the whole of the range, projection javelin, tortured and superlative physical presence: Diapason knees!

"Revelation of the evening, baritone Alfred Walker embodies a hallucinating and hallucinating Dutch. African-American singer impresses with safety and extent of means, such as mastering a beautifully worked, without stumbling partition, and the sovereign rule of the language and style. The stamp is dark and deep (it evokes that of Willard White), a colorful romance, as the character is powerful inside game led with great efficiency. ClassiqueInfo

"Schulin has delivered strength, surprisingly expressive and direct the masterpiece, which appears so amazing that almost wishes, now no longer deal that in this version. Opéra Magazine
