Scenic conversions great song cycles are currently in vogue. Most of them, however, apply tragic-romantic works such as Schubert's Winterreise and Schumann's Dichterliebe. Director Waut Koeken dedicated to contrast the Italian Song Book by Hugo Wolf, a wonderfully light, summery mood image that is about love, longing, teasing, jealousy and (in) fidelity.
46 italian love poems, derived from folk songs and written by the German poet Paul Heyse: From the joy of being in love the praise of beauty and ridicule various songs to deep feelings of abandonment, all emotions are represented.
Even a superficial glance shows that moves the sequence of songs in Italian Songbook by changing thematic priorities. Live unfortunately they are offered seldom - and then only in part. All the more gratifying, as shown genussreich of 1890 to see these small, quick-witted, mischievous and also wistful songs as it promises Koekens careful interpretation way.
