White People Drinking - The Controversial Comedy in Broadway WHITE PEOPLE DRINKING - THE CONTROVERSIAL COMEDY
Three Clubs
5/31-6/22/2018
(if you think it’s about you, you’re probably right.) White People Drinking serves up all the topical taboo scenarios we fear on a silver platter of wit and whimsy. Rooted in a modern American drama, WPD highlights the dangers of complacency and contentment by poking fun at the plethora of cookie cutter modern dramas that usually consist of families drinking and yelling at each other. This one-of-a-kind dark comedy sits you down at a dinner party full of secrets, opinions, and unfiltered drunk words. This philosophical, full tilt, facade filled commentary leaves no stone unturned, pulls no punches, and promises to offend in every fantastic way. "Thought-Provoking" and "Laughter Guaranteed… Sugimoto, displays his amazing ability to create characters with deep-felt heart and soul through his incredible imagination and understanding of human nature, builds a world where societal constructs get striped away and what remains is all too human…” - Broadway World ‘White People Drinking’ made its World Premiere last year, and just like fine wine, it has gotten better with age. Join this party if you are 21 + with valid ID at Three Clubs, 1123 Vine St, Los Angeles, CA 90038. Blind Spots in Broadway BLIND SPOTS
The Stephanie Feury Studio Theatre
6/1-6/22/2018
Blind Spots is a black comedy about a gay journalist who battles her homophobic sister… to the death. Set in a small New England town, Blind Spots follows Gretchen as she attempts to expose injustices on the local college campus while juggling the needs of a passionate young lacrosse player, a completely batty mother and a sexually frustrated best friend. But the politics become personal when her reactionary sister Kate blackmails Gretchen in an attempt to quiet her poison pen, leading to a showdown in which dark family secrets are exposed. Critics have described Colette Freedman’s previous work as “highly entertaining,” “meticulously carved, smart and witty rhetoric,” “moving and relevant”. With similar themes and tone to her award-winning, internationally produced “Sister Cities”, Freedman once again brings her signature wit to a complex and pressing issue in this black comedy, allowing an audience to find humor amid tragedy. Blind Spots includes a cast of five women and offers a poignant and funny look at the dysfunction that feeds family relationships.

Benevolence in Broadway BENEVOLENCE
The Actors Company Other Space Thaetre
6/2-6/23/2018
benevolence n. desire to do good to others ( source: Random House Webster’s College Dictionary). In Hamid Janguard’s new two-act play, benevolence is a guiding principal in the conduct of the individuals in his narrative. No one is deliberately cruel. All want to do the right thing, even when the consequences of their actions don’t always make that apparent. Benevolence is actually comprised of three interconnected stories: In 1986, the marriage of a young couple with a baby begins to disintegrate; In 2000, a couple takes a getaway camping trip in a state park; In 2016, an older man with two marriages behind him moves to a small town to be near his successful son, from whom he has kept a dark secret. The gay bartender at the local tavern has recently broken it off from a longtime partner. Most of these characters are connected to each other across the decades in ways that they would not initially suspect. Will a spirit of benevolence continue to guide their lives? Andres Palencia directs.

Downtown Los Angeles is a study in contrasts. With advancing gentrification, the affluent and the hip are pouring money into the district. This is taking place just a couple blocks from Skid Row, home to the lowest of the low, where danger, filth and abject poverty pervade the street. Downtown is also home to Los Angeles’ Historic Core, meaning this part of the city is old. There are ghosts here, many, many ghosts. A homeless man is your guide to Downtown L.A., and The City Underneath. Written and performed by Evan Lorenzetti. Directed by Jessica Lynn Johnson.

Guys and Dolls in Broadway GUYS AND DOLLS
Sunset Theatre Company at the El Camino College Campus Theatre
6/23-6/24/2018
Sunset Theatre Company is an award winning youth theatre that is proud to present Guys and Dolls. Saturday show at 7:30 pm and Sunday at 12pm. Considered by many to be the perfect musical comedy, Guys and Dolls ran for 1,200 performances when it opened on Broadway in 1950. It received nearly unanimous positive reviews from critics and won a bevy of awards, including Tony Awards, Drama Desks and Oliviers. Set in Damon Runyon’s mythical New York City, Guys and Dolls is an oddball romantic comedy. Gambler, Nathan Detroit, tries to find the cash to set up the biggest craps game in town while the authorities breathe down his neck; meanwhile, his girlfriend and nightclub performer, Adelaide, laments that they’ve been engaged for fourteen years. Nathan turns to fellow gambler, Sky Masterson, for the dough, and Sky ends up chasing the straight-laced missionary, Sarah Brown, as a result. Guys and Dolls takes us from the heart of Times Square to the cafes of Havana, Cuba, and even into the sewers of New York City, but eventually everyone ends up right where they belong.

Cock Tales the Play: Shame on Me! in Broadway COCK TALES THE PLAY: SHAME ON ME!
Santa Monica Playhouse
6/24-6/24/2018
Debra Ehrhardt possesses a rare ability to mesmerize!” raves the Washington Post. Reviewplays.com calls her “a terrific story-teller!” Audiences have adored her in her critically acclaimed Jamaica, Farewell, and now she’s back for one night only with her new show, Cock Tales: Shame on Me! When her husband heard the name of her new show, he almost lost his mind. “When I began writing Cock Tales, I thought I was writing about sex. But, I soon came to realize that sex is an entirely different subject,” says Ehrhardt, whose colorful history of a lifetime of encounters with a world full of testosterone-fueled gentlemen, and not-so-gentle men, has given her plenty of source material from which to create a memorable evening of theater – much to her husband’s light-hearted chagrin. Helmed by renowned director Joel Zwick (My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Fat Albert).. Proceeds support the Santa Monica Playhouse Benefit Campaign. One night only. 310-394-9779 x1. “A must see!” Jamaicans.com

All - Male Alice and The Fabulous Tea Party for Pride 2018 in Broadway ALL - MALE ALICE AND THE FABULOUS TEA PARTY FOR PRIDE 2018
Santa Monica Playhouse
6/8-6/30/2018
It's a wild and crazy ride as the All the Queens's Men present a "fabulous" re-invention of Lewis Carroll's wonderful Wonderland stories in an imaginative musical Alice and the Fabulous Tea Party for Pride Month 2018. It's a perfect night out with all seats at $20, where everyone is invited to enjoy a glass of complimentary champagne or sparkling cider to toast Lewis Carroll's 120th birth year! Alice and the Fabulous Tea Party is a short run you don't want to miss, playing Friday and Saturday evenings at 9:30 pm June 1 to 30, 2018. Vaudeville, burlesque, panto, farce and fantasy combine to make this a no-holds-barred evening of hilarious theatre. Set in a fabulously overdone and wild garden-themed Victorian salon, Alice (now a grown woman) returns to Wonderland at the invitation of her old friend, the Queen of Hearts. Once there, she finds that things are just as madcap and nonsensical as ever. Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, the world's most famous enantiomorphs have eaten all the food for the tea party, and the Queen is furious. Alice is put in charge of producing refreshments and entertainment, her search taking her on a delightful excursion through the world of puns, fantasy, and surreal humor that Lewis Carroll so intriguingly created. "A winning blend of vaudeville, English pantomime and music hall." DRAMA-LOGUE A "jewel of a theatre" (Jewish Journal), Santa Monica Playhouse "knows what its audience expects from an evening of theatre" (LA TIMES). Based on the original musical "Alice and the Wonderful Tea Party" written by Chris DeCarlo and Evelyn Rudie ("Your work is brilliant!" English Shakespeare Company), Alice and the Fabulous Tea Party is re-imagined and performed by the Playhouse's All-Male Fairy Stories for Pride Company All the Queens Men: Ali Cesur, Luke Martin McMahan, Joseph Perez, Graham Silbert, and Nima Ghassemian as Alice. Beautiful and authentic costumes by Graham Silbert, magical special effects by Nima Ghassemian, and Eric Jon's ornately detailed Victorian garden-themed salon set create the perfect wonderland feel. Alice and the Fabulous Tea Party plays Friday and Saturday evenings at 9:30pm, June 1 to 30, 2018. General admission is $20, with a glass of complimentary champagne or sparkling cider included with each ticket. For reservations and more information go to http://SantaMonicaPlayhouse.com or call the Playhouse Box Office at (310) 394-9779 ext. 1. Reservations are necessary. Mexican Day in Broadway MEXICAN DAY
Rogue Machine Theatre
5/26-7/1/2018
Unprecedented in Los Angeles theatre, award-winning playwright Tom Jacobson has created a trilogy of plays based on local history, and simultaneously produced by three theatre companies. Mexican Day is being presented by Rogue Machine, opening at 4pm on Saturday, May 26, 2018. Lines are meant to be crossed. In 1948, Los Angeles Tribune reporter Hisaye Yamamoto puts her job at risk when she joins forces with civil rights pioneer Bayard Rustin to desegregate Bimini Baths. Will it be a new beginning, or the beginning of the end? “Los Angeles history is underexplored,” observes playwright Tom Jacobson. “The core of all three plays is based in absolute truth, examining conflicts related to race, gender and sexuality. Although elements are fictionalized, four of the characters in the trilogy were real people strongly represented in the historical record. I was able to use the actual writing of Hisaye Yamamoto, Bayard Rustin and Everett Maxell as inspiration for those characters, some of whom appear in more than just one play in this trilogy.” From 1902 to 1951 Bimini Baths was the premiere hot springs resort in the city of angels, serving everyone from movie stars to maids. Admission was just 25 cents, but only if you were white. A tragedy to triumph epic, this new play trilogy The Ballad of Bimini Baths (Plunge, Tar, and Mexican Day) traces 50 years of social change in Los Angeles. Tom Jacobson is L.A.’s most acclaimed historical playwright, known for weaving threads of history, humor, sexuality, and religion into his story telling. Selected works include Walking to Buchenwald at Open Fist (TOP TEN – Stage Raw), The Devil’s Wife at Skylight Theatre Company (“pitch-perfect comic timing” – LA Times), the award-winning Bunbury, Tainted Blood, Ouroboros and The Friendly Hour at the Road Theatre Company. Twentieth-Century Way premiered at The Theatre @ Boston Court and the New York International Fringe Festival (five Ovation Award nominations, four Los Angeles Drama Critics’ Circle nominations, one GLAAD Award nomination, Fringe Festival Award for Outstanding Production of a Play, PEN Center Award for Drama), moving Off-Broadway to Rattlestick Playwrights Theatre. Additional awarded work includes House of the Rising Son at Ensemble Studio Theatre/LA (Los Angeles Times “Critics’ Choice,” winner of two LADCC Awards, and GLAAD Award nomination). “This play uses L.A.’s history to bring insight to the L.A. and U.S.A. of the present,” notes director Jeff Liu. “It also celebrates the pioneering author Hisaye Yamamoto and civil rights legend Bayard Rustin and in some small way continues their story, which turns out to be our story.” Jeff Liu adapted and directed the Pulitzer Prize nominated play Yellow Face by David Henry Hwang for the YOMYOMF Network on YouTube, his two-part film premiered at the Los Angeles Pacific Asian Film Festival in 2013. Selected theatrical credits include the LA premiere of Chinglish (Critics’ Choice – LA Times), which became the highest grossing play ever at East West Players, the world premieres of Terminus Americana (Ovation Award nominee for Best World Premiere) by Matt Pelfrey, Texas, Solve for X by Judy Soo Hoo, The Chinese Massacre (Annotated) by Tom Jacobson, and Ixnay, Wrinkles, and Slice by Paul Kikuchi. He is a member of the O’Neill National Directing Fellowship cohort of 2016. Cast: Darrell Larson (as Everett Maxwell), Jully Lee (as Hisaye Yamamoto), Jonathan Medina (as Zenobio Remedios), and Donathan Walters (as Bayard Rustin). MEXICAN DAY is part of a trilogy called THE BALLAD OF BIMINI BATHS, which includes PLUNGE, running simultaneously at Son of Semele Theater, 3301 Beverly Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90004, and TAR at Playwrights’ Arena in Atwater Village Theatre Complex, 3269 Casitas Ave. LA, CA 90039. Palo Alto Players
6/15-7/1/2018
THE MAN WHO CAME TO DINNER By Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman Direction by Patrick Klein A noted radio personality and egotistical tyrant, Sheridan Whiteside, slips and falls on the steps of the Stanley family residence. He’s forced to spend several weeks of recuperation, wreaking havoc and mischief on the lives of everyone he comes in contact with. Join the Stanleys as ex-convicts are invited to meals, transatlantic calls bring a $784 phone bill, penguins take residence in the library, an octopus moves into the cellar, 10,000 cockroaches take over the kitchen… and then there’s the mysterious mummy case. We’re thrilled to welcome back our friends from the Gunn High School community and local star James Shelby as Sheridan to present this great American classic on the Lucie Stern stage! “As fresh a send-up as an SNL sketch and an even more inspired plot!?” - Entertainment Weekly

The Last Schwartz in Broadway THE LAST SCHWARTZ
Edgemar Center for the Arts
5/19-7/1/2018
It’s the first Yahrtzeit (anniversary of the death) of family patriarch Manny Schwartz, and the Schwartz clan has gathered for dinner prior for the unveiling of the deceased’s tombstone scheduled for the following day. They’re at the Schwartz home in the Catskills, although the members of the family have actually been far-flung in recent days. Norma, the take-charge daughter, is the most religiously traditional of the bunch. After she turned in her teenage son to the cops (and jail) because he had a joint, her husband left her. Her brother Herb is there with his wife Bonnie, a convert to Judaism. They’ve been trying to produce an heir for nine years, without success. Another brother, Gene, arrives with his young, hot non-Jewish girlfriend Kia, a model and actress, in tow. Gene gets around. One more brother, Simon, is an Australia-based astronomer who doesn’t like to be touched. The Schwartzes are not producing heirs to carry on the family name, it seems. Will traditional Jewish ritual draw the family together, or will a web of secrets and deceptions be indicative that the world has seen The Last Schwartz? Written by Deborah Zoe Laufer. Directed by Kiff Scholl.. Presented by West Coast Jewish Theatre.

Based on Federico Fellini’s “Nights of Cabiria,” SWEET CHARITY was director Bob Fosse’s riotously colorful valentine to his then-wife, Broadway dancing phenomenon Gwen Verdon. Premiering in 1966, it was nominated for 9 Tony Awards. The story centers on Charity’s life as a dance hall hostess “with a heart of gold,” determined to break out of the Fan-Dango Ballroom. 100 Aprils in Broadway 100 APRILS
Rogue Machine Theatre
6/9-7/16/2018
Winner of the 2017 Ovation Award for “Best Season,” and two time recipient of the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle “Polly Warfield Award for an Excellent Season in a Small to Mid-Size Theatre,” Rogue Machine opens a stunning new play on June 9th. 100 APRILS is a darkly comic look at the generational consequences, and insanity, of history denied. John Saypian is a modern-day Don Quixote. He and his family are second generation Armenians whose parents escaped the Genocide. John believes that a tormentor is pursuing him. Is the enemy a haunted memory from his childhood or is he real? Universal in scope, 100 Aprils mines the seeds of hope from a truth that must be told. Elina de Santos is producing this world premiere. “I felt that I needed to contribute something to honor, and coincide with, the centennial commemoration of the Armenian genocide,” says playwright Leslie Ayvazian. “It is a story that all Armenians carry, and tell throughout generations. This particular telling comes from an absurdist world. It lives partially in hallucination and partially in dreams that cannot be silenced.” 100 APRILS opens on Saturday, June 9th at 8:30pm and runs Saturdays and Mondays at 8:30pm, Sundays at 3:00pm through July 16, 2018 (no performances on Monday, June 25th). Pay-What–You-Can on Monday, June 11th ($5 minimum starts 7pm at box office only). Rogue Machine is located in The Met, 1089 N Oxford Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90029. Tickets are $40. The Humans in Broadway THE HUMANS
Ahmanson Theatre
6/19-7/29/2018
The angst, anguish and amity of the American middle class are first coaxed - then shoved - into the light in this uproarious, hopeful, and heart-breaking play that takes place over the course of a family dinner on Thanksgiving. Breaking with tradition, Erik Blake has brought his Pennsylvania family to celebrate and give thanks at his daughter's apartment in lower Manhattan. As darkness falls outside the ramshackle pre-war duplex, and eerie things start to go bump in the night, the Blake clan's deepest fears and greatest follies are laid bare. Our modern age of anxiety is keenly observed, with humor and compassion, in this new American classic.

Higher & Higher: The Jackie Wilson Story in Broadway HIGHER & HIGHER: THE JACKIE WILSON STORY
Hologram USA
6/7-7/31/2018
Jackie Wilson is resurrected via state-of-the-art hologram technology to sing classic hits (like "Higher & Higher") and live out the highs and tragic lows of his life story. Wilson was the RnB star who invented the stage presence that Elvis Presley, James Brown and Michael Jackson would learn so much from. Caught up in the corruption of the record business at the time--and his own vices for sex and drugs--Wilson finally slipped into a coma, with Elvis and M.J. paying his last hospital bills. The show presents Jackie, known as Mr. Excitement, in all his glory though--a powerful voice, who helped invent Rock and Roll.

The Death and Life of Mary Jo Kopechne in Broadway THE DEATH AND LIFE OF MARY JO KOPECHNE
Odyssey Theatre
6/28-8/12/2018
The Death and Life of Mary Jo Kopechne tells the story of an American tragedy from the point of view of the victim – a young woman who became famous one night in 1969 when the car she was in plunged off a bridge on Martha’s Vineyard on the way back from a midnight tryst on the beach. A prominent United States senator who’d had too much to drink was at the wheel. He survived. She didn’t. Mary Jo Kopechne was a Democratic campaign worker and idealist with ambitions of running for the Pennsylvania State Assembly. A demure Catholic with little experience with men, she was not the type to have an impulsive sexual adventure with a married man. But does she say no to a man of considerable power and influence, a man who could help advance her career, a man she also may have admired? A dilemma that has become particularly prominent in the #MeToo era we are living through. In his hotel room Ted Kennedy is frantically trying to devise some way out of this potentially career-ending disaster when his two dead brothers and his father miraculously show up to help him try to salvage not only his political future but the family’s reputation. They are deep in damage control scenarios when there is a knock at the door. They open it to discover Mary Jo Kopechne standing there. Soaking wet. And very angry. The Kennedys try desperately to persuade her to help them cover up the incident. The decision that she has to make in the next few hours will determine not only Ted Kennedy’s fate but also that of the entire nation, perhaps for decades to come. What will she do? Written by Peter Lefcourt. Directed by Terri Hanauer.

The Blade of Jealousy in Broadway THE BLADE OF JEALOUSY
The Whitefire Theatre
6/24-8/26/2018
World Premiere of Henry Ong's modern adaptation of Spanish Renaissance Playwright Tirso de Molina's "Jealous of Herself." A madcap comedy of disguise and deception set in modern day Los Angeles Dashing Melchor unexpectedly falls in love with a mysterious, completely veiled lady (Magdalena) outside a cathedral, and she with him. He later meets her sans veil but not recognizing her as the lady from the cathedral, is unimpressed, thus igniting Magdalena's jealousy--of herself! This scenario sets the stage for Henry Ong's modern take on a 17th century Spanish play that is surprisingly relevant today, in light of society's obsession with outward beauty and how it relates to self-worth. Adapted from Tirso de Molina’s, “La Celosa De Si Mismo" by Henry Ong from a translation by Harley Erdman Directed by Denise Blasor. Original Music and Sound Design by Longo Chu. Performances every Sunday at 7 p.m. from June 24 to August 26, 2018
