MUSE/IQUE Summer Series Continues With MOVEMENT/ALOUD

MUSE/IQUE, Pasadena's pioneering live music organization and counter-conventional orchestra, continues STATES/UNITED: Mapping Musical America, its inaugural summer series at The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens, on July 28 with MOVEMENT/ALOUD!, at the Brown Garden Lawn, adjacent to the Virginia Steele Scott Galleries of American Art. Tickets are on sale now at http://muse-ique.com/.

The second stop in the STATES/UNITED journey, MOVEMENT/ALOUD! is a musical celebration of the emergence and varied roots of the American voice. The MUSE/IQUE orchestra, led by Artistic Director Rachael Worby, welcomes violinist Alyssa Park, pianist HyeJin Kim, vocalist Catalina Cuervo, trumpeter Rob Schaer and Ballet Hispanico, the premier Latino dance organization in the United States, for an eclectic, distinctly American program, featuring music by John Williams, George Gershwin, and Irving Berlin, as well as the songs of Lin-Manuel Miranda, Consuelo Velázquez, Gloria Estefan and more.

Program highlights include:

  • Violinist Alyssa Park, the youngest prizewinner in the history of the Tchaikovsky International Competition, and concertmaster of the New West Symphony, will play "It Ain't Necessarily So" by George Gershwin, arranged by Jascha Heifetz.

  • Trumpeter Rob Schaer will perform John Williams' "With Malice Toward None" (from Lincoln). Schaer has been featured in several big band albums and television/motion picture soundtracks for artists including Williams, Patti Austin and The Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra.

  • Ballet Hispánico will perform "Carmen.Maquia," a contemporary take on Bizet's beloved opera. Hailed as a "masterpiece" by the Chicago Sun-Times, the physically charged and sensual choreography fuses contemporary dance with nods to the Spanish paso doble and flamenco.

  • Pianist HyeJin Kim joins the MUSE/IQUE orchestra for a performance of George Gershwin's Concerto in F. A graduate of the Colburn School's Conservatory of Music, HyeJin Kim is one of South Korea's most thrilling young classical stars. Kim first attracted international attention at age seventeen when, as its youngest participant, she won third prize in the prestigious Busoni Competition in Italy. Since then, she has received numerous awards including prizes at the Hong Kong International Piano Competition and at the Toronto International Piano Competition.

  • Colombian vocalist Catalina Cuervo sings Lin-Manuel Miranda's "Breathe" from In The Heights, and other featured songs. Cuervo was named one of the 5 most successful Colombian sopranos by the Colombia's Ministry of Culture. She holds the distinction of having performed the most productions of Ástor Piazzolla's tango operetta María de Buenos Aires.

Please visit the MUSE/IQUE website for additional programming details.

On Saturday, August 25, the STATES/UNITED journey concludes with U.S./ROUTES, an exploration of classic American R&B, soul and pop, and iconic locales within America's vast musical landscape.
