Drawing from an ancient Kannada epic, Girish Karnad's Bali examines the complexity of the man-woman relationship, within and outside a marriage. While looking at it through the lenses of caste and creed, this play juxtaposes these relationships with the struggle between two religions. Based on the system of 'view-points' proposed by Anne Bogart and Tina Landau, this staging of Bali uses the grammar of movement and physical theatre, trying to capture the psychological and emotional states of its characters. It is an attempt to interrogate what the term 'bali' means to us today. How has violence in its many forms has become a part of our day-to-day life. Isn't sacrifice an act of violence? By comparing and contrasting, the play questions why such acts of violence find validation in the name of religion, tradition and culture.
