In A Word in Broadway IN A WORD
Mildred's Umbrella Theater Company
7/27-8/12/2017
Kicking off its 16th season, Mildred’s Umbrella Theater Company (MU) takes a trip through memory, perception, and grief with the Houston premiere of IN A WORD by award-winning playwright Lauren Yee. Set two years after the disappearance of Fiona and Guy’s son Tristan, Yee’s poetic mystery play uses wordplay and the imperfection of memory to tell the story of a family wrecked by grief and attempting to re-assemble their lives. Absurdist imagery and a surreal plot combine with slippery meanings as both Fiona and Guy seek an answer to what happened that fateful day and how to move on. "The textured layers and complex, sometimes comedic wordplay drew me in,” said Artistic Director Jennifer Decker on why she chose the play. “I was also very impressed with how much this young playwright has achieved so quickly in her career. Premiering her work in Houston seemed like the perfect way to launch our new season." Lauren Yee, a San Francisco native who now resides in New York, has received several awards for her writing, including the Francesca Primus Prize from the American Theatre Critics Association and a Susan Smith Blackburn Prize nomination for IN A WORD. She is also a former MAP Fund grantee and fellow with the Dramatist’s Guild, the Edward F. Albee Foundation, and the MacDowell Colony. You can read more about her works at her website: www.laurenyee.com. Home Grown Theatre presents the timeless 9-time Tony Award winning musical Fiddler on the Roof. Heathers in Broadway HEATHERS
Queensbury Theatre
8/11-8/19/2017
Based on the cult classic film of the same name, Heathers is the story of Veronica Sawyer, a senior at the fictional Westerberg High. Veronica longs to be cool like the clique of it-girls that runs Westerberg: the unaffected, unattainable Heathers, whose cool-factor is only matched by their selfishness- bullying their kingdom into submission. Veronica quickly finds herself torn between a new world of popularity and her old friends and hobbies, while attracted to a mysterious newcomer at school named Jason Dean (JD). When Heather Chandler dies because of a mix up in beverages, JD convinces Veronica to stage Heather’s suicide. The results are so successful that JD begins a quest to rid Westerberg of the cruelly popular elite forever. With raw and (frighteningly) culturally relevant numbers like 'Beautiful,' 'Candy Store,' and 'Yo Girl,' Heathers is cutting edge theatre not to be missed!
