Pinkerton, a Lieutenant in the US Navy, falls in love with and marries a Japanese girl called Cio-Cio-San (Butterfly). As a result, Butterfly is abandoned by her family and Pinkerton departs, only to return – with his American wife – three years later to fetch his son.
