The direction by Henry Akina underlines the opera’s beauty and lyricism while at the same time bringing out the tragic collision of East and West… The Finns just love this work,” wrote Itä-Savo newspaper in 2009. Puccini’s elegant opera is now deservedly back in the repertoire.

Pinkerton, a Lieutenant in the US Navy, falls in love with and marries a Japanese girl called Cio-Cio-San (Butterfly). As a result, Butterfly is abandoned by her family and Pinkerton departs, only to return – with his American wife – three years later to fetch his son.
