Finnish star soprano Karita Mattila continues her series of unforgettable interpretations of Janá?ek. This searing description of a young woman's fate is among the most important operatic works of the 20th century.

Jen?fa is carrying Števa's child, but Laca won't leave her be. Rejected, Laca destroys Jen?fa's beauty with a slash of his knife. Who would want a woman with a scar on her face and a child born out of wedlock? Jen?fa's foster mother feels impelled to make a cruel choice. Leoš Janá?ek's music reflects both the oppressive atmosphere of the small rural village and the good cheer of folk music. Karita Mattila herself portrays the young conflict-torn Jen?fa.
