Morgan: Sassy and slightly cynical, the most urban of the group. Must possess a good sense of physical comedy. (Sings: Turn Back, O Man) Actors of Any Ethnicity strongly encouraged to audition. ETHNICITY: Any Ethnicity

John The Baptist/Judas: Has attributes of both Biblical figures: Both Jesus' lieutenant and most ardent disciple and the doubter who begins to question and rebel. Charismatic, in an overt revolutionary way. Must possess a good sense of physical comedy. (Sings: Prepare Ye, All for the Best, On the Willows) (Baritone Eb top solo note, should have an E for harmonies) Actors of Any Ethnicity strongly encouraged to audition. ETHNICITY: Any Ethnicity

Anna Maria: Tough, yet open and sweet. The first of the group to commit to following Jesus in the song Day by Day. Must possess a good sense of physical comedy. (Alto or Mezzo) Actors of Any Ethnicity strongly encouraged to audition. ETHNICITY: Any Ethnicity

Nick: Very high energy. Impish and playful. Must possess a good sense of physical comedy. (Sings: We Beseech Thee) (Tenor-falsetto high D above staff) Actors of Any Ethnicity strongly encouraged to audition. ETHNICITY: Any Ethnicity

Celisse: The class clown. A goofy cut-up. Must possess a good sense of physical comedy. (Sings: Learn Your Lessons Well) (Mezzo) Actors of Any Ethnicity strongly encouraged to audition. ETHNICITY: Any Ethnicity

Telly: Not the brightest in the bunch but has a great sweetness and innocence. Must possess a good sense of physical comedy. Sings All Good Gifts (Tenor-high A) Actors of Any Ethnicity strongly encouraged to audition. ETHNICITY: Any Ethnicity

Uzo: The shy one. Sometimes a little slow to get things, but then commits all the way. Has an earthy warmth. Must possess a good sense of physical comedy. (Sings: By My Side) (Alto) Actors of Any Ethnicity strongly encouraged to audition. ETHNICITY: Any Ethnicity

George: The comedian. Must possess a good sense of physical comedy. (Sings: Light of the World) (Baritone, should have an E for harmonies) Actors of Any Ethnicity strongly encouraged to audition.

Lindsay: A confident show-off. The first to volunteer, sometimes jumping in before really understanding what's going on. Must possess a good sense of physical comedy. (Sings: Bless the Lord) Soprano -high A in “Bless the Lord” high C (“violin” note) in “We Beseech Thee”) Actors of Any Ethnicity strongly encouraged to audition. ETHNICITY: Any Ethnicity

AUDITION PREPARATION for GODSPELL: This is an ensemble cast where all actors must sing, dance/move well, and act - playing a musical instrument is a plus, but not a must. Prepare a short song in the style of the show (folk/rock etc) and if you play a musical instrument please bring it with you. Actors may accompany themselves on their instrument as they sing. However, there will be a piano in the audition room and an accompanist present on Feb 21 and 22 ONLY. There will be NO accompanist present on Feb 20. Bring headshot and resume.

THE 39 STEPS

Richard Hannay: (male 30-45) upper-class Englishman; handsome, square-jawed leading man, who is quite aware of how attractive he is; back in London after a time abroad with enough money to keep him idle; at loose ends, he’s bored stiff; a chance meeting at a West End show with Annabella Schmidt, a beautiful European woman on the run from spies, leads to Richard being framed for her murder; he goes on the run, one step ahead of the police, to try to clear his name and stop a spy ring from taking government secrets out of the country. English accent. Actors of Any Ethnicity strongly encouraged to audition. ETHNICITY: Any Ethnicity

Pamela, Annabella Schmidt, Margaret: (female 20-35) one actor will play all three roles. Pamela: the classic Hitchcock leading lady; beautiful, stylish, warm, intelligent, and feisty; she meets Richard by accident on a train as he is trying to escape from the police; unwillingly, she becomes caught up in his life and escape, sure he is a homicidal murderer until she eventually realizes he is telling the truth and falls in love with him as well; English accent. Annabella Schmidt: a mysterious Russian beauty, a la Garbo, being pursued by spies; an agent in a life-or-death game of espionage that she unfortunately loses; she is murdered in Richard’s apartment before finishing her mission; Russian accent. Margaret: a fresh and innocent Scottish farmwife, married to an older, cold, and abusive man, living in the middle of nowhere; thrilled when Richard stumbles across their farm; she helps him in any way she can, no matter the consequences; Scottish accent. Actors of Any Ethnicity strongly encouraged to audition. ETHNICITY: Any Ethnicity

Clown 1: (male 25-45) a superb comic character actor who will play many roles, with ages ranging from teens-60’s, male and female. Roles include but not limited to the following--Mr Memory: a West End music hall performer, whose act consists of knowing the answer to any question asked; his involvement in the espionage plot does not become apparent until the end of the show; Cockney accent. Crofter: a Scottish tenant farmer, married to Margaret; cold, suspicious, and a bully, he is abusive to his wife and betrays his promise to help Richard; Scottish accent. Mrs. Jordan: Professor Jordan’s wife, she is an upper-class Brit, seemingly warm and helpful; English accent. Mr. McGarrigle: he runs a country hotel with his wife; sweet if a bit dim; Scottish accent. Actors of Any Ethnicity strongly encouraged to audition.

Max Prince: (male, 35-59) Bigger-than-life comic actor who is the mega-star of a hugely popular television variety show “The Max Prince Show,” based on Sid Caesar and “Your Show of Shows;” cannot help but dominate a room entirely. Lucas Brickman: (male, 20-35) The freshman writer; sensible and sincere. Our story guide. Actors of Any Ethnicity strongly encouraged to audition. ETHNICITY: Any Ethnicity

Milt Fields: (male, 30-47) The flamboyant “gag” man; a joke a minute wholesaler who deals in fast paced patter. Actors of Any Ethnicity strongly encouraged to audition. ETHNICITY: Any Ethnicity

Val Slotsky: (male, 30-47) A senior member of the staff; the most politically aware of all the writers; a Russian immigrant, he should still carry a strong accent. Actors of Any Ethnicity strongly encouraged to audition. ETHNICITY: Any Ethnicity

Brian Doyle: (male, 30-45) Irish-American, with a biting sense of humor and bitter outlook on life, smokes, drinks, and coughs a lot. Actors of Any Ethnicity strongly encouraged to audition. ETHNICITY: Any Ethnicity

Kenny Franks: (male, 25-37) Considered the “boy genius” of the group but also the most sophisticated of the writers. Actors of Any Ethnicity strongly encouraged to audition. ETHNICITY: Any Ethnicity

Ira Stone: (male, 35-43) A hypochondriac, comes in late every day with a new ailment. Actors of Any Ethnicity strongly encouraged to audition. ETHNICITY: Any Ethnicity

Carol Wyman: (female, 28-40) The only female staff writer. Strong. Independent. Fiery. Actors of Any Ethnicity strongly encouraged to audition. ETHNICITY: Any Ethnicity

Helen: (female, 20-30) Max’s secretary, attractive in a quirky way and completely out of her element amongst the writers. Actors of Any Ethnicity strongly encouraged to audition. ETHNICITY: Any Ethnicity

As a CORST Theater (Council of Resident Stock Theaters) Saint Michael’s Playhouse MUST hire a minimum of five AEA actors to perform in consecutive productions to establish a resident company.
