BREAKDOWN

[VIOLA] Female, Person of Color/Asian American, 20s. Smart, resourceful and strong. Viola feels deeply and is emotionally vulnerable, but is creative and determined in the face of adversity, which she faces when shipwrecked on an island and is forced to disguise herself as a boy (named Cesario) for much of the play’s action. As Cesario she is romantic, witty and charming, able to move easily from verbal sparring to moments of deeply personal connection and honesty. Needs facility with Shakespearean language and verse, including iambic pentameter. Though playing a boy for much of the play, the actor doesn’t need to primarily focus on creating the realistic illusion of being a young man, but, rather, focus on truthfully playing the given circumstances, relationships between characters, dramatic action and language.
