BREAKDOWN

Arnold – (age 25-32) A Jewish, homosexual, New York City drag queen. Unconventionally attractive without being beautiful, Arnold is extremely articulate, smart, and funny, and often uses his wit to protect himself. He goes after what he wants voraciously. He talks a good game and he's often cynical, but underneath has a gigantic heart.

Ed – (age 35-45, any ethnicity) Handsome and charming, he is the love of Arnold’s life. A school teacher, he is square, traditional, heteronormative, and so unbending that he might break. He isn’t comfortable coming out of the closet. He is of a slightly older generation than Arnold.

Mrs. Beckoff (age 49-65) Arnold’s Jewish mother, she is a force of comedy and pathos. Stubborn and feisty, she is Arnold’s ultimate sparring partner. Loves her son but deeply rooted in tradition and doesn’t understand his lifestyle or his ideas of family and becoming a parent.

Laurel – (age 30-45, any ethnicity) Ed’s girlfriend and then estranged wife. Intelligent, but naive in her optimism. Intrigued by Ed’s bisexuality, she considers herself a forward thinker.

Alan – (early 20s, any ethnicity) Arnold’s considerably younger boyfriend. Since arriving in NYC at the age of 14 he has survived as a hustler and model but aspires to be an actor. His looks almost always get him what he wants. Youthful and free, he doesn’t seem to have ever struggled with his sexuality.

David – (age 15-18, any ethnicity) Arnold’s foster son. David has had a tough childhood so he has an edge that hints of danger, but as a survivor, he makes the most of his situation and lives life with humor, honesty, and sarcasm. Unapologetic about being gay or about anything else.
