ABOUT THE SHOW:
Oakland in 1967 is a powder keg of social activism ready to boil over into radical action. For the patrons of Miss Trish’s bar, it’s all just talking points — until the explosive and seductive force of the revolution walks through the door. History and imagination collide with vibrant humor and echo into our present moment in this stirring new play from Tori Sampson (NYT Critic’s Pick If Pretty Hurts, Ugly Must Be A Muhfucka) and directed by LPTW Lucille Lortel Award winner Taylor Reynolds (Tambo and Bones).
Setting: Oakland, California
Time: October 1967
MR. FAR — A smooth talker. Mid-50s, black man.
MS. TRISH — Owner of the bar, Mother of Sassy; 40-something-year-old creole black woman. Classy. Still. Rules the bar with humor and leeway.
DREW — Customer at the bar; 20-year-old black man. Stumbling to find his purpose.
SASSY — Daughter of Ms. Trish; 21-year-old light skin creole black woman. AS GRIOT: Ageless. timeless.
TROY — Customer at the bar; 22-year-old dark-skinned black man. College student. Erudite, calculated, aspirational.
GAIL — Best friend of Sassy; 21-year-old brown skin black woman. Flirtatious. Vibrant.
HUEY — Cofounder of the Black Panther Party. A bad muthafucka.
GENE — “Unofficial” member of the Black Panther Party; 20-something-year-old black man.
JOHN FRE — Oakland officer; 23-year-old white man.
HERBERT HEANES — Oakland officer; 25-year-old white man. (Doubles as Officer)
