BREAKDOWN
ALL ACTORS MUST HAVE STRONG COMIC TIMING AND AN EXCELLENT FACILITY WITH
LANGUAGE

KATE - A high school senior, 18, female-. Smart. Intense. Actress must be capable of great depth and
emotion, and also have incredible comic timing and a facility with language. Charming and likable
even when she’s saying unlikable things. A tour-de-force actress and story-teller. The heart and soul
of the play.

CARP (aka Ms. Carpenter) - the AP Science teacher, 30s-40s, female, any race. Smart & empathetic.
She is a little like everyone’s favorite high school teacher. Sometimes frazzled and scattered, she
loves her job and loves reaching the next generation of minds even more. Actress also plays ASHLEY
(ASH) POWERS . A right-wing radio talk show host (think Tomi Lahren). Kentucky accent. While
much of the comedy of this play comes from Ash, it would be easy to write her off as ridiculous or
over-the-top. But her arguments are spoken intelligently and rationally. She truly believes what she
says and we should immediately understand how someone like her became so popular. So while the
actress must always be aware of playing the comedy, it should come from an honest and grounded
place.
