New York Classical Theatre

CONTRACT
LOA
$550 weekly minimum (LOA ref LORT) - every hour over 31 hours per week will be paid at $18/hour; includes pension & health.

SEEKING
Equity actors for roles in New York Classical Theatre's and Cincinnati Shakespeare Company's production of THE REWARDS OF BEING FRANK by Alice Scovell (see breakdown).

It is in service of our mission that we assemble a company whose majority, like the city we serve, is comprised of historically underrepresented performers. We are seeking to include actors who self-identify as: Black, Indigenous, Asian, Pacific Islander, Latinx/Latino, North African, Middle Eastern, Indian, or multiracial to offer NY Classical’s currently predominantly white leadership creative partners with a valuable perspective, community network, and cultural heritage different from their own. NY Classical is committed to expanding the representation of ethnicity, gender, body type, and ability in our productions.

INSTRUCTIONS
Please prepare a 60-second late 19th Century monologue in upper-class dialect for the characters of Lady Bracknell, Cecily, and Algernon. Frank should speak with a working-class London dialect (Estuary, not Cockney). Email your headshot/resume and video submission.

Deadline: Fri, Oct 7, 2022

The Rewards of Being Frank is a sequel to Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest. It is set seven years following the end of Wilde’s comedy (1902). The play takes place both in London and at the family country estate in Hertfordshire.

SEEKING:

Lady Bracknell: (Female, mid-60s to mid-70s): Mother of Gwendolen, aunt of Earnest and Algernon, overbearing, snobbish, manipulative, myopic, concerned with public appearance, fancies herself as flexible and generous (which she is not). A bulldozing pillar of society. She makes the rules and breaks the rules.

Cecily Cardew: (Female, late 20s): Married to Algernon, mother of Will, heiress, successful author, loves language, appears innocent yet wise beyond her years, dreamer yet practical, had a sheltered upbringing in the country.

Algernon Moncrieff: (Male, mid-30s to 40s): Married to Cecily, father of Will, brother of Earnest (formerly Jack), nephew of Lady Bracknell, and cousin of Gwendolen, a dandy, raised and educated in privilege, concerned about his societal standing, deeply concerned about his clothes.

Frank Teacher (Male, late 20s): handsome/magnetic/charismatic, ambitious, opportunistic, flirtatious, self-satisfied and self-serving, honest to a fault, practical, a third-rate tutor, from the lower middle class, a working-class accent.

Ernest [Male, mid-30s to 40s; CAST]

Gwendolen [Female, mid to late-30s; CAST]
