David is a fledgling science fiction writer suffering from writer's block. Hoping a dramatic change of scenery will allow him to revise his novel, he flies to Poland to stay with his 73-year-old second cousin Maria, a Holocaust survivor who is profoundly lonely and obsessed with her distant American family. David is only there for the free room, but Maria assumes he is there primarily to connect with her. As David and Maria's bond develops and peaks, she reveals a deep secret about her post-war past that ruptures their relationship and teaches them both something new about what it means to be a family.
---
MARIA: 73, a Polish woman, spirited, pushy, opinionated, honest, eager to spend time with family, loyal.
DAVID: 24, her second cousin, author of young adult novels, at first reluctant to open up to Maria, dry, sometimes sarcastic humor.
ZENON: 50, her Polish friend, a taxi driver, large brutish man, short fuse in defense of Maria.
