BREAKDOWN


La Femme is thrilled to present the world premiere of the 1979 revision of Tennessee Williams's "The Red Devil Battery Sign," an uncannily prescient expose of American political corruption. Set against the backdrop of the Mexican American culture and its rich mariachi tradition, love takes root amid social, political, and spiritual upheaval -- and then dramatically morphs into existential liberation.
SEEKING:
KING DEL RAY
Male, late 40s to 60s. Mexican American. A passionate, loving man with violent tendencies. Once a famous mariachi musician, he is now in rapid decline suffering from a brain tumor. He falls into a tumultuous affair with the Woman Downtown. A fallen hero of sorts. Sings three songs. Actors of all Latinx backgrounds encouraged to audition.
PERLA
Female, late 40s to 60s. Mexican American. King’s wife and a hotel maid whose fierce pragmatism and love both sustain and crush King. She loves both King and Nina but is ambivalent about her daughter’s independence. Actors of all Latinx backgrounds encouraged to audition.
LA NINA
Female, 20s, Mexican American. King and Perla’s daughter. She is a highly talented singer and the former star attraction of King’s band but left to start a solo career in Chicago. Sings one song.Actors of all Latinx backgrounds encouraged to audition.
TERRENCE MCCABE
Male, 20s to 30s, Caucasian. An Irish American marketing statistician in love with Nina, and desperate for King’s approval. He is married to another woman.
GRIFFIN
Male, 40s to 50s, Caucasian.The manager of The Yellow Rose Hotel, in cahoots with the Red Devil Battery Corporation. He is determined to keep the Woman Downtown in the hotel while she is recovering from electroshock therapy.
CHARLIE
Male, 30s to 40s, Caucasian. The Yellow Rose Hotel bartender, loyal to Griffin. He is determined to help Griffin keep the Woman Downtown in the hotel.
DRUNK
Male, 40s to 50s, Caucasian. A local Dallas drunk on the move. He makes advances toward the Woman Downtown in the hotel bar.
CREWCUT
Male, 20s to 30s, Caucasian. A hotel employee who doubles as a spy for The Red Devil Battery Corporation.
FIRST CONVENTIONEER
Male, 40s to 50s, Caucasian. Red Devil Battery functionary. The Woman Downtown believes them to be henchman sent by her husband to keep her in check.
SECOND CONVENTIONEER
Male, 40s to 50s, Caucasian. Red Devil Battery functionary. The Woman Downtown believes them to be henchman sent by her husband to keep her in check.
DRUMMER
Male, 20s to 30s, Caucasian. A henchman for The Red Devil Battery Corporation. He is feline and agile. Must be able to play the drums.
OLD MAN/PHARMACIST
Male, 70s, Caucasian. A sensitive, responsible professional.
WOLF
Male, mid 20s, open ethnicity. The gang leader of the Wasteland Boys. He comforts the Woman Downtown after King’s death. Must move well.
BOY
Male, 18+ to play mid-teens, open ethnicity. A young gang member of the Wasteland Boys. Must move well.
HOOKER
Female, early-mid 20s, Caucasian. A local Dallas prostitute with a mind of her own. Will double as a Wasteland Boy. Must move well.
WASTELAND BOYS
Early 20s, open ethnicity. Two gang members. Must move well.
