BREAKDOWN

All actors need excellent London (not Cockney) accent. These are middle-class merchants, respectable, modestly educated and without airs. Actors of all ethnicities and backgrounds are encouraged to audition; casting will be color-blind.

ANNIE SCOTT: (Leading Role) Early 20’s; a smart, lively and ambitious young person. Quick wit and sharp tongue, with little tolerance for fools or foolishness. Willful and determined. Once you get her attention, she can surprise you with her sensitivity.

THOMAS SCOTT: (Leading Role) 55-65, Scott is a charming presence, likable and enthusiastic. When he is in good spirits, he takes pleasure in singing hymns, which he does with cheerful vigor and a good strong voice. When he is not, he doesn’t sing a note and can be somewhat forbidding (at least to his children.) Scott is a simple, sturdy man, who puts his duty first, always trying his best to do what’s right, even if his view of that is quite narrow.

ELLEN SCOTT: 50-60, a gentle, quiet woman who prefers her husband and children to occupy the foreground. Ellen is more practical than her husband is, so she worries more. She loves her husband and is protective of him, and perhaps a little naïve about his faults.

LEONARD SCOTT: 15-16 (ideally played by an actor of 18+): Leonard is a bright, ambitious student with a good sense of humor. Sweet disposition. Must play some simple tunes on the piano with ease.

TEWKESBURY: 55-65. Somewhat spineless, Tewkesbury is a political creature without true convictions of his own. Likes to talk, and does it with some skill. Perhaps tall and thin.

GEORGE RUFFORD: 55-65. Rufford a hearty, kindly man with good common sense and a good sense of humor. He has his beliefs and his convictions, but he lacks prejudice. He is realistic about the how the world is changing, but not worried about it.

JOHNNY TITE: 25-30. Johnny is awkward and shy, but really quite charming. Sweet and well meaning, Johnny is smitten with Annie, but has a hard time imagining that he has a chance.

HARTLY PETERS: 25-30. Peters is a smart young fellow, a sophisticated cynic with little patience for chapel going folks like Scott. Dresses well and is eager to impress the ladies.

WICKSTEED: 50-60; a modern, prosperous businessman with the easy charm of a good salesman. He is at ease with himself and with others.

MAY RUFFORD: Late teens or early 20’s. May is a sweet, conventional girl; but she’s just bold enough to be drawn to Annie and to adore her.

LUCY GRIFFIN: Late teens or early 20’s. A bit spoiled and rather full of herself. Lucy may be smarter than she appears.
