ABOUT THIS PRODUCTION: We are currently living through a collective moment of internal rage, unrest, and revolution that cannot be ignored. This brand new, reimagined production will take the form of a live, pop punk concert from which the theatrical event will erupt! We will channel the inherent theatricality of a live concert to create Percy, Annabeth, and Grover’s journey to the underworld.

THE LIGHTNING THIEF is a coming-of-age story. This is the story of a generation that is tired of fighting the monsters created by the generations before. A generation wielding a righteous rebellion that is kicking and screaming for a better existence on this planet. A generation who feel discarded by their parents, who want to be wanted, who want to be fully seen. It is the story of a group of friends who find each other, see each other, protect each other, rage for each other, and become family. With their powers combined, they must face the impossible and reestablish peace in their world.

Note: We are looking for a different kind of performer than what has been traditionally featured in past productions. Vocally we are not looking for polished or musical theatre perfection. We are looking for gritty and gutsy performers (while staying true to the demands of the score). Voices that allow for raw and rebellious emotion to break through. Think Willow Smith, Meet Me @ The Altar, Blink-182, Paramour. We may not be looking for perfection, but we are looking for excellence.

SEEKING:

No roles will be understudied.

PERCY JACKSON – Son of Poseidon. A kid with a tough exterior but a sensitive heart who spent his whole life defending himself. Fueled by impulse, he must now own his power and go on the offensive to save his mother, the most important thing. Strong pop-rock tenor. Gender: Male or non-binary. BIPOC+/Global Majority performers are encouraged to submit.

ANNABETH CHASE – Daughter of Athena. Overqualified but unseen. She is over being invisible. Learning to live unapologetically in her brilliance, she is unwilling to hide her black girl magic. She got it from her mama. Embracing the hypervisibility inherent in her identity with expressive hair that will never fit under a hat. Strong pop-rock high belter. Black Femme performers are encouraged to submit.

GROVER UNDERWOOD – A soft spirit. Intuitive and sensitive. Keeping the group motivated and driving forward, he takes the responsibility of friendship very seriously. His empathy and humor disguise the fact that he is working through deep guilt and shame from the past. Hoping to be seen as worthy. On his journey, he discovers he is enough. Also Mr. D (aka Dionysus). Strong folk-pop tenor. Gender: Male or non-binary. BIPOC+/Global Majority performers are encouraged to submit.

CLARISSE, SALLY JACKSON & OTHERS – A range of roles including Clarisse: daughter of Ares, Sally: Percy’s hard-working mother, The Oracle, and a variety of other characters. Strong pop-rock soprano with high belt. Gender: Female or nonbinary. BIPOC+/Global Majority performers are encouraged to submit.

MR. BRUNNER & OTHERS - A range of roles including Chiron: a wise centaur and part-time Latin teacher, Poseidon: god of the sea, Hades: god of the dead, and a variety of other characters. Strong pop-rock bari-tenor. Gender: Male or nonbinary. BIPOC+/Global Majority performers are encouraged to submit.

LUKE & OTHERS – A range of roles including Luke: son of Hermes, Gabe: Percy’s foul step-father, Ares: god of war, the ferryman to the underworld, and Minotaur. Strong pop-rock bari-tenor. Gender: Male or nonbinary. BIPOC+/Global Majority performers are encouraged to submit.
