BREAKDOWN

Synopsis: SuperHero, by Ian Eaton, is a new play about a young boy who fantasizes about having super powers. After a tragic event, Ian’s fantasies of being a “super” man are shattered when a neighborhood bully forces him to confront the kind of man he wants to become. SuperHero is a coming-of-age story that follows Ian’s experiences of navigating strict West Indian parents, girls, and Catholic school amidst the backdrop of 1980’s Manhattanville Projects in Harlem.

SEEKING:

NOTE: All actors must portray the general spirit of grade school children, not be babies. This part of us emerges now and again. We ask that you tap into this younger version of yourself.

[ iAN/IAN ] - Black male, 18+ to portray ages 5 & 10. He is a fun and creative kid who loves comic books, acting out his favorite TV shows, and all things super. He’s smart, warm, and sociable, yet he can often be insecure.

[ BARRY / STEVE ] - Black male, 18+ to portray ages 12 & 15. Barry Eaton - 15: Older brother of iAN. He is a creative and soft-spoken young man who spends most of his time drawing. Only slightly street smart, his recent weight loss is helping him to come out of his shell. He is the visual artist to iAN’s performing. Steve Brown - 12: Intimidating and imposing, he is willful, aggressive, and accustomed to getting his way. What he lacks in book smarts, he makes up for (some of it) being very street smart. Also plays Doug, Man’s Voice, and MTA Announcer.

CAST:

[ POP / MR. SIMMS ] - CAST. 30-50s Black male. Several characters. Pop is an affable hard-working man from the Virgin Islands. Mr. Simms is a former athlete from the south who is still eager to show his students how good he is. Also plays Will age 10, Father Louis, and Mr. Merrill.

[ MOM / TANISHA ] - CAST. 30-50s Black female. Several characters. Mom was raised in the Virgin Islands and spent her teen years and on working in NY. Tanisha, age 10, is iAN’s classmate and crush.
