Breakdown

Synopsis:
SOUL DOCTOR, the exuberant new Broadway musical, tells the true story of
the beloved yet controversial father of popular Jewish music, Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach. A modern day troubadour, he ignited the spirit of millions around the world with his soul-stirring melodies, transformative storytelling, and boundless love. SOUL DOCTOR takes us on a musical odyssey through the challenges and triumphs of this cultural phenomenon: his childhood escape from Nazi Germany, becoming a rabbinical prodigy in America; his unlikely friendship with Nina Simone, discovering Gospel and Soul music; his meteoric rise as a “Rock Star-Rabbi” in the 1960’s, performing with Bob Dylan, Jefferson Airplane and The Grateful Dead; his struggle to reconcile his deep traditional roots with his desire to reach people of all backgrounds in the “free-love generation”; and his personal conflicts trying to keep his family together while traversing the globe as a “Soul Doctor”, bringing joy and song to the lonely, the searching and the brokenhearted.

Seeking:

SHLOMO
Male, 25-40. Excellent singer, tenor/bari-tenor, sweet, strong, soulful, flexible voice, more soul/folk-rock feel than musical theatre. Ideally plays guitar enough to accompany himself. SHLOMO is a charismatic, soulful, warm, insightful, playful, loving, compassionate, passionate and generous dreamer with a quest. Most of all, he believes in the power of Joy. Starts out as a brilliant, shy young Jewish scholar, then, with many inner and outer struggles, moves past the boundaries of his Orthodox tradition to become a beloved, if controversial, Rabbi/Composer/Folksinger/Spiritual Teacher/Storyteller known all over the world. THIS ROLE HAS BEEN OFFERED; SEEKING UNDERSTUDIES.

NINA SIMONE STANDBY / ALTERNATE
BLACK FEMALE 20-35. Killer soul singer. Deeply soulful, insightful, with an edge and attitude, smart, super talented jazz/soul singer/pianist, strong center, somewhat angry about how hard it is for a young black woman to make it, but too spiritually connected to be really bitter. At her core there is joy. Actress does not actually have to play the piano. Must have excellent comic timing. THE ROLE OF NINA HAS BEEN OFFERED; SEEKING STANDBY/ALTERNATE.

FATHER / MILT
Male, 45-65. Baritone/tenor. SHLOMO’S FATHER: Dignified, Cultured Viennese (accent optional) Orthodox Rabbi, learned, urbane, erudite, kind. He was the chief rabbi of Vienna before having to flee the Nazis. MILT: Record producer/Shlomo’s manager. A mover and a shaker in the music biz, who can really spot talent and knows how to promote it. Good hearted, not a user. ALSO SEEKING STAR NAMES.

MOTHER
Female 35-55. Alto or mezzo-soprano. Shlomo’s mother. Elegant, powerful, Viennese (accent optional) rabbi’s wife. A stern and dictatorial personality. Fiercely protective of her children. Definitely rules the roost. May also appear in ensemble.

ELI CHAIM
Male, 25-40. Bari-tenor. Shlomo’s brother. Must have the skill to play from age 25yrs – 60yrs at the end of show. He and Shlomo are non-identical, fraternal twins. An Orthodox Jewish scholar, intelligent, playful, passionate, earnest, warm, concerned. Deeply devoted to his brother’s welfare and passionate about bringing non-practicing Jews back to their tradition. Plays other roles as well, appears in ensemble. Proficiency with a musical instrument a plus. THIS ROLE HAS BEEN OFFERED; SEEKING UNDERSTUDIES.

REB PINCHAS
Male, 35-60. Any vocal range. Traditionalist. An annoying, grandiose, obsessive/compulsive Orthodox Jewish tutor in Vienna (accent optional).

YOUNG SHLOMO
Male, 11-13. Good Singer. Unchanged voice. Charismatic, playful, curious, adventurous, smart young Jewish boy from cultured family in Vienna (no accent necessary). May play other roles in the ensemble.

YOUNG ELI CHAIM
Male, 11-13. Good singer. Unchanged voice. Young Shlomo’s fraternal twin brother; anxiety-prone, smart young Jewish boy from a cultured family in Vienna (no accent necessary). Also understudies YOUNG SHLOMO. May play other roles in the ensemble.

RUTH/WIFE
Female, 18-29. Excellent singer with a strong mix/chest voice and soprano. Folk rock/contemporary pop sound. RUTH: Emotionally fragile spiritual seeker. Hippie. Vulnerable, loyal young woman. SHLOMO’s WIFE: Young, romantic leading lady. Radiant, smart, with a strong emotional core. Bedrock of her home. Not a pushover. Proficiency with a musical instrument a plus.
