SEEKING

Equity actors for 2 principal roles and 2 understudies.

PREPARATION

Update: Actors will now read from sides, provided at the audition (no monologues). In
addition, actors coming in for BERNIE/MALE ACTOR 2 and for MALE UNDERSTUDY
should also be prepared to play 32 bars of an American standard on the piano. Actors
coming in for FEMALE UNDERSTUDY should also prepare 32 bars from a song in the
American songbook — an accompanist will be provided. Total audition times should be no more than 2 minutes.

ELLIOTT/MALE ACTOR 1
Male, 40’s to late 50’s, any ethnicity. Urban and sophisticated, well-spoken and charming. Able to play a variety of ages and social classes. He plays the men with whom Judy has significant relationships, both familial and romantic. Primary roles are ELLIOTT, Judy’s sound engineer in the recording session featured in the play, and GERRY MULLIGAN, her last lover.

DAVID OPPENHEIM - Judy’s husband, a composer
ADOLPH GREEN - lyricist and Revuer company member, big brother to Judy
MAX GORDON - owner of the Village Vanguard, mentor to Judy
UNCLE JOE GOLLUMB - Judy’s socialist uncle
RICHARD ARENS - H.U.A.C. counsel, prosecutes Judy for Communism
GARSON KAININ - director and writer
GEORGE CUKOR - film director


BERNIE/MALE ACTOR 2
Male, 40’s to 50’s, any ethnicity. Character actor, funny & very affable, capable of being both bombastic & gregarious. Actor must be able to play the piano well enough to accompany actor playing Judy on approximately 8 songs. Primary roles are BERNIE, the musical director of the album Judy is recording and Columbia Pictures President HARRY COHN.

ABE TUVIM - Judy’s carousing father
HARRY BROCK - lead character in Born Yesterday
LEONARD BERNSTEIN - composer and one of Judy’s oldest friends
DARYL ZANUCK - Fox director, a misogynist
KENNETH BIERLY - American Business Consultant, author of Red Channels
SEN. ARTHUR WATKINS - H.U.A.C. counsel, indicts Judy of Communism
JACK LEMMON - actor and Judy’s co-star


MALE UNDERSTUDY
Male, 40’s to 50’s, any ethnicity. Will understudy both male tracks, so actor must be able to play the piano well enough to accompany actor playing Judy on approximately 8 songs. Should be a charming, funny character actor who is comfortable embodying a wide variety of roles.

FEMALE UNDERSTUDY
Female mid/late 30’s to late 40’s, any ethnicity. Will understudy both JUDY HOLLIDAY and RUTHIE/FEMALE ACTOR 1, so we are seeking and actor who is a strong singer. Looking for someone who is very versatile and is able to play both vulnerability and broad comedy. Major roles include in the RUTHIE track include Judy’s mother, her roommate and sometime lover, her best friend, and a handful of Hollywood actresses.
