BREAKDOWN

Additional Information: In reference to the character descriptions below – Some of the characters in this show are on the gender binary and written with he/him or she/her pronouns as you will see in the following descriptions. However, we seek to be as inclusive as possible and ask gender non-conforming, genderqueer, transgender and non-binary actors to submit for the roles they most identify with. As race is a key element to the storytelling of the play, we have also listed race/ethnicity when specific to the character. Please let us know if you have any questions, concerns, or if there are any accommodations we can provide.

Directors Note: “safeword. is a play about love, sex, loyalty, and trust and is presented in a raw, unapologetic, and, at times, abrasive way. To tackle such issues, while shying away from nudity, for fear that it would embarrass either its audience or its performers, would be disingenuous to the message of the piece. Therefore, nudity will be used in this production. Please also note, that while only one character will be fully nude in the play, ALL actors must be comfortable appearing in minimal clothing (underwear/BDSM gear).

LAUREN - Female Identifying, Black, 31, married to MICAH. Currently working as a customer service representative for a tech company after leaving a promising career as a chef due to stress. She has been with Micah since high school and is rather traditional, yet open minded and curious. There is a lot under the surface.

MICAH - Male Identifying, White, 31, married to LAUREN. Currently working as the head chef at “Trop de Cuisiniers”, a restaurant he and Lauren opened together after graduating from culinary school. He feels a lot of guilt over the events which led to Lauren’s leaving of the restaurant, especially since, between the two of them, she is the true culinary genius. He carries a lot of secrets. MUST BE COMFORTABLE WITH FRONTAL NUDITY.

CHRIS - Genderqueer, White, Jewish, 29. Partner of XAVIER; they have been together for seven years. Works as a nurse practitioner. They are a healer, open minded, approachable, and opinionated. MUST BE COMFORTABLE IN UNDERWEAR, TOPLESS.

XAVIER - Male Identifying, Black, Jewish, 33. Partner of CHRIS. Works out of his apartment as a Pro Dom, which he has been doing for most of his adult life. While he is authoritative and decisive in the dungeon, he is timid and shy outside of the world of Sub/Dom play.
