QUIXOTE NUEVO
(Octavio Solis, playwright; TBD, director)

Jose Quijano/Don Quixote: Male, Latinx, late 50’s-60s. Quijano is a former professor whose brilliant mind is withering away with age. He believes he is Don Quixote on a hero’s journey to reunite with his love Dulcinea, a quest that seems misguided to others. He is wise, proud, charismatic, theatrical, and hiding a painful past.
Manny Diaz/Sancho Panza: Male, Latinx, 30s-40s. Manny is a paleta (popsicle) vendor. In Quijano’s fantasy he plays Quixote’s righthand man Sancho Panza. This is a part Manny is game to play, if only to keep an eye on his friend. He is funny, all heart, and knows more than he lets on.
Papa Calaca/Ensemble: Male, Latinx, 30s-40s. Papa Calaca or Papa Muerte is leader of the Calacas (skeletons) here to usher in the end Quijano’s time on earth. A troubadour of sorts.
Dulcinea/Dr. Campos/Ensemble: Female, Latinx, 30s-40s. The woman of Quijano’s dreams who appears as an apparition, pushing him forward on his quest to find her. She is his first love, and his one true love.
Bruno Castillo/Young Quijano/Ensemble: Latinx, 30s-40s. Bruno is the bartender and co-owner of Rosario’s Lounge and Karaoke, the local bar. He is a man with unwavering authority, gusto, and a great sense of humor. He keeps the severed finger of Pancho Villa as a souvenir in a jar.
Antonia/Inez/Ensemble: Female, Latinx, 20s-30s. Antonia is Quijano’s dutiful niece and Magdalena’s daughter. She is determined to take care of her uncle all by herself, and fights against her mother’s wishes to send him to a nursing home. She is compassionate and intelligent, but in a little over her head when it comes to her uncle.
Magdalena/Perla/Ensemble: Female, Latinx, 50s. Magdalena is Quijano’s younger sister. She took him in when his health began to deteriorate but has since grown resentful of her brother and the extra stress he brings on the family house. She is exhausted and out of options.
Juana/Rosario Castillo/Ensemble: Female, Latinx, 30s-40s. Juana is Manny’s wife and the mother of their children. She is sassy and pragmatic. She is not happy about Manny’s current expedition and promises that whatever trouble he might get himself into won’t compare to the trouble he is in at home.
Padre Perez /Cardenio/Ensemble: Male, Latinx, 50s. A man of God. Close to the family and close to the community. Humble and compassionate, but not much tolerance for the demons he thinks possess Quijano.

THE TEMPEST

Actors must be able to move well. Athleticism, background in movement and dance preferred.
Prospero (60-69): Male, any ethnicity. Rough, brilliant, fierce, scarred and frightening, with something golden hidden inside him. A man with a voice of terrifying power that has stood on the sand and summoned spirits from a roaring sea. He has the physical charisma and command of a born showman, a magician who knows, keeps, and uses dark secrets. Any experience with stage magic is helpful
Caliban 1 (18-64): Any gender, any ethnicity. Caliban will be played as conjoined twins embodied by two Pilobolus-style dancers who will both move the role and speak the text. Seeking exceptional dancer/movers who can express their inner-life with their bodies, as well as handle complex text. Athleticism, strength, and strong movement background required. PRECAST
Caliban 2 (18-64): Any gender, any ethnicity. Caliban will be played as conjoined twins embodied by two Pilobolus-style dancers who will both move the role and speak the text. Seeking exceptional dancer/movers who can express their inner-life with their bodies, as well as handle complex text. Athleticism, strength, and strong movement background required.
Miranda (18-29): Female, any ethnicity. A wild child raised with an acute sense of wonder and an intense curiosity about the world and all it contains. Disarmingly charming, funny without knowing it.
Ferdinand (18-29): Male, any ethnicity. The young prince of Naples and Alonso’s son. Funny without awareness or effort. Possibly quirky and awkward and something of a misfit.
Alonso (45-65): Male, Any ethnicity. Ferdinand’s father. A king who lives in the world of hard reality. A pragmatist in private whose whole emotional life revolves around his love for his son. Not always a good man, but always a passionate dad.
Antonia (45-60). Female, Any ethnicity. Prospero’s traitorous younger sister. Brilliant, funny, engaging, and completely without conscience. A person you would trust, even as she cuts your throat.
Sebastian (40-55): All genders, Any ethnicity. The younger sibling of Alonso who lives (not happily, but perhaps resignedly) in Alonso’s shadow. Easily led and unconsciously funny. As the king's sibling, they are used to the role of complaining and criticizing without having to do anything about the problem.
Gonzalo (60-80): Male, Any ethnicity. A lovable and funny mature individual with a great heart, a good mind. Prone to make others laugh and feel good. This is a person of deep feeling and conscience. He must also have some practicality and moral flexibility, as he has continued to serve those that overthrew and put to sea his old master. PRECAST
Stephano (30-50): Male, Any ethnicity. A drunken butler. Must be very, very funny first and foremost, but also be good at comic improvisation. Agile, strong, and flexible mover, able to sing and handle complex Shakespearean text. The dominant half of a classical comic duo (e.g. Laurel and Hardy, Abbott and Costello, etc.); actor also plays The Master.
Trinculo (20-50): Male, Any ethnicity. A drunken jester. Must be very, very funny, good at improvisation, an agile, strong and flexible mover, able to sing (and hopefully play some small, easily carried instrument as well), and handle complex Shakespearean text. The straight man or put-upon half of the classical comic duo, small stature (even very small) could be a plus; actor also plays Boatswain.
Juno (20-39): Female, Any ethnicity. A muse. Part of the onstage music ensemble. Must sing.

P-Sam: Male, African-American Mid to late 30's. Busybody. Sweet-talker. Hustler. Always eager for his next gig. The percussionist.
Pumpkin: African-American Female, Mid 20's-30's. Still waters run deep. Waitress, cook and caretaker of Paradise Club. A loving thing with a soft touch. Generous to a fault. Adores poetry. Some singing required.
Blue: African-American Male, Mid 30's. Gives off an air of mystery. Quiet danger. Aloof. Has a hard shell and a hard interior. Battling many demons. A gifted trumpeter. Ideally seeking an actor with musical/rhythmic facility to learn basic trumpet, or who plays trumpet.
Corn: African-American Male, Mid 40's. Easygoing and thoughtful. A real sweetheart with a weakness for love. The pianoman.
Silver: African-American Female, Late 30s to early 40s. Mysterious. Sexy. Charming. Gritty and raw in a way that men find irresistible. Has a meeeeaaaannnn walk.

THE FSB OFFICER:
White Male, 40-50s. An old school KGB agent stuck in a modern-day FSB world, living on the frontier of his home country. A bureaucrat. An idealist. A true believer.
THE WRITER: White Male, 45, one of the hostages as well as the creator of Nord-Ost, the musical taken hostage by Chechen terrorists in October 2002. A dissident. A seeker.
MASHA: White Female, 16-23, dragged to Nord-Ost by her parents when she really just wanted to stay home and chat with her friends. A practical philosopher. A realist.
KAYIRA: White Female, mid-20s, one of the Chechen women who helped hold the theater hostage by strapping a bomb to her body. Fiercely determined. Old beyond her years.

June- African-American female, 30’s, (she/her/hers). This is her idea. She needs the journey. She says it is because of holes, but it is probably also something else
Frankie- African-American female 30’s (she/her/hers). Everyone thinks she has it together but she knows she doesn’t. Dedicated to her work and to the people she loves. Seemingly steady but underneath it all, she is holding her heart together. She wants to be able to name what she needs. She wants to feel like she is driving her own life.
Rain- African-American female, 30’s (she/her/hers). Her ex called her a sad person before he left her and it’s been a thing for her. Is she a “sad person?” Rain is tired of letting his words define her, but mostly she doesn’t want to be alone in her apartment and hopes that this trip/journey will fast forward her grieving process.
Willie- African-American Trans Femme 30’s (they/them). Wishes they could express themselves more in front of their friends, but their friends think they have it all together and have a great sense of self which is true but also not true. Wants to know if it is possible to just be a mess and be strong and not be praised or criticized for either one.

Annette Raleigh: Female 40s-50s, Any ethnicity. Works in “wealth management.” Married to Alan; Anxious to please and always looking to do the right thing, but clearly not a pushover. At times, on the verge of a panic attack.
Alan Raleigh: Male 40s-50s, Any ethnicity. Very successful and high-powered attorney who seems to be preoccupied with his work; Married to Annette; thinks he is the smartest person in the room.
Veronica Novak: Female 40s-50s, Any ethnicity. Writer and part-time employee at an art history bookstore; Married to Michael; the catalyst for bringing the two couples together; articulate and serious-minded; As the situation disintegrates, she fails to maintain her crumbling façade of civility.
Michael Novak: Male 40s-50s, Any ethnicity. Owner of a wholesale company that sells household goods; Married to Veronica; Initially eager to create peace, his uncouth nature is slowly revealed.
