BREAKDOWN
COALHOUSE WALKER, JR.
Male. African-American. Powerful, rich Baritone with high notes. Character is late-20s to 40s. A leading man of power, presence, sexuality, edge, integrity, and charisma; has nobility and a ferocity we discover as his expectations of how he should be treated come into conflict with the reality of the experience of a Black man at turn of the century; his final resort to violence is the climax of the story. Piano skills a plus, but not required.
SARAH
Female. African-American. Strong belter with good mix and nice soprano. Character is 20s-30s. Lovely, passionate, headstrong, yet innocent, simple, and quite shy; acts on her emotions without thinking.
TATEH
Male. Eastern-European. Baritone with good high notes. Character is mid-30s to mid-40s. A dynamic leading character man; a Jewish immigrant, Tateh challenges his old life and seeks a better one for his daughter; even when it seems he is beaten by society, his innate strength and humor lift him up; warm, funny, filled with life and pass
