SWEENEY TODD

Aug 21, 2012 - Oct. 28, 2012

Music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim Libretto by Hugh Wheeler

Directed by: Chris Coleman

Widely acknowledged as Stephen Sondheim’s musical masterpiece, Sweeney Todd is set amongst London’s seedy side streets and laced with Sondheim’s characteristically brilliant wit and dark humor. This landmark musical depicts the barber Sweeney Todd’s savage quest for justice and retribution after years of false imprisonment. Aided by harridan pie shop owner Mrs. Lovett, who is secretly in love with him, he sets out to avenge the wrongs done to him and his family. Combining comic turns and chilling drama, music hall-style numbers and hauntingly beautiful romantic songs, Sweeney Todd offers a fascinating portrait of a man driven to madness by injustice.

Sweeney Todd: late 40s/early 50s. Bass/baritone. He is described in the script as having the build of a dock worker, so think Daniel Craig. Thick, sturdy, sexy – and dangerous. Has to have a real edge of complexity and danger.

Anthony: mid to late 20s. A handsome, young sailor. Excellent baritone/tenor. Handsome yes, but strong, also.

Johanna: the script says 18. So needs to look early twenties. Stunningly pretty. And gorgeous, lyric soprano.

Beggar Woman (Lucy): mid-40s. A haggard, mentally deranged street woman. Mezzo-Soprano (but would be great if she had a high C in there). You also have to believe that 15-20 years ago, she was as gorgeous as Johanna.

Judge Turpin: early 60s. A corrupt, lascivious aristocratic Judge. He is all propriety on the outside, and deviousness inside. Definitely has to have a danger to him, and the more homely he is – the ickier his attraction to Johanna will be.

The Beadle: 40s or 50s. A plump, solicitous cop. Tenor. He is oily (in the sense of always looking for a way to better his own lot, whether that route is just or not). And conniving. But the surface is serene.

Pirelli: late 40s /50s (he’s a contemporary of Sweeney). Tenor. An Irishman, who has adopted the persona of a famous Italian Barber. He is slick, and preening – a showoff. Highly competitive.

A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM

Oct 16, 2012 -Dec 23, 2012

By William Shakespeare Directed by: Penny Metropulos

Helena: Female. Tall; (At least taller than Hermia, but it’s fun if she is really tall). Quirky, insecure, flirtatious and very needy… one might say she suffers from arrested development.

Demetrius: Male. A physical match for Helena. More of a privileged mama’s boy. He has not had to work for much, so doesn’t know the worth of much. He has wanted for little so, he wants what he can’t have.

Theseus/Oberon: Male. Early 30s to late 40s: Sexy, compelling leading man; Dangerous, vulnerable. He has soul, and a romantic one; and his power is driven by jealousy as well as a magnificent and obsessive love. Needs great Shakespeare chops for that beautiful poetry.

Hippolyta/Titania: Female Late 20s to 40. Lovely, sexy, strong, powerful and warm leading lady. She can devastate with a look. Her power lies in her great love and compassion… be it for Oberon, or the child; for human kind, or Bottom. Like Oberon, she needs great Shakespeare chops.

Puck/Philostrate

Ideal would be a physically fit 30-something. Gender flexible – could be a man or a woman, variety of sizes and ages, depending on physical agility. This is the stage manager of chaos and order (in both roles), the bringer of dreams and nightmares. Should be well, puckish in nature… not necessarily in size. Must be agile of mind, tongue and body. (Tumbling skills would be great though not necessary) Should be charming in an edgy and dangerous sort of bad boy way. Preferable if actor could sing.

Changeling

This kid would be an usher at court under the care of Philostrate, as well as in the fairy kingdom. Aged 9 to 12. Boy or girl who can sing.

Snug

Should be a very sweet natured with an “everyman” quality. Again it could be a man or woman… but if it is a woman she should have quite a few years on the Flute.

Snout

Male. Older. Would be nice to have a sizable person for this role.

Starvling

Male. Thin if possible. He has a prickly nature.

By James Still Directed by: Jessica Kubzanksy

Seeking:

James Beard – The American Chef.

Before Julia Child, before today’s proliferation of cooking shows and networks, there was James Beard, the first TV chef. He brought fine cooking to the small screen in 1946 and helped establish an American cuisine, but as is often the case with pioneers his early efforts on screen have been lost. He went on to become America’s first “foodie,” and the award bearing his name is still the prize most coveted by chefs. Playwright James Still invites you meet the man described as “the face and belly of American gastronomy” in this play that recreates an evening at Beard’s New York home.PCS will join with Portland’s nationally-recognized food community to honor our homegrown culinary star.

When a young actress shows up hours late for her appointment, she knows she may have blown her chances at the role. THE WHIPPING MAN

Jan 29, 2013 - March 24, 2013

By Matthew Lopez Directed by: Rose Riordan

Simon: 50s, former slave in the DeLeon home

Caleb: 20s, only child of the DeLeon family

John: 20s, former slave in the DeLeon home

In the post-Civil War South, three men are tied to each other by history and faith, but are also bound by secrets. A badly-wounded Jewish Confederate soldier returns home at war’s end to find that his family has fled to the countryside. Remaining in the city mansion are two former slaves, also raised by his family as Jews. With Passover upon them, the three men unite to celebrate the holiday, even as they struggle to comprehend their new relationships at a crossroads of personal and national history. The Whipping Man, which premiered in New York earlier this year to great acclaim, is an extraordinary tale of loyalty, deceit and deliverance.
