BREAKDOWN

[SEYMOUR]
Asian/API, Latinx, Indian, or mixed race Male, 20s-early 30s. A naive but well-meaning hero. An orphaned son of immigrants. Sweet and resourceful. Awkward but not a “silly, prat-falling nerd,” rather he has been made small by his circumstances but when he glimpses a bigger, better life he is willing to fight for it. Comedic-timing and easy charm essential. Must be excellent singer. Bari-tenor (G4-A2)

[AUDREY]
Caucasian Female, 20s-early 30s. She protects her sweetness with a sense of humor and understated strength. Has been loved by bullies, almost exclusively. Rather than the traditional Audrey archetype (“Marilyn Monroe meets Goldie Hawn, but without the education or self-worth”), our Audrey will have all these elements of sweetness and glamour but with a comedic toughness, like a cross between Lucille Ball and Debbie Harry. Need not present like a blonde stereotype, in hair color or personality. Must be excellent singer - Soprano with strong rock mix/belt (D5-Ab3).

[CRYSTAL]
African American Female, 20s. One of three women who are the eyes and ears of this neighborhood. Street-wise, funny, hip, and confident. She is blunt, very funny, sexy and tough (think Lizzo, but as a part of a 1960s girl group). Alongside Ronnette and Chiffon, Crystal serves as the Greek Chorus to this comedic tragedy. She both observes/comments on the action of the play and also participates, especially when there’s an opportunity to make a little pocket money. Must be excellent dancer and singer, adept with tight harmonies (F5-Ab3).

[CHIFFON]
African American Female, 20s. One of three women who are the eyes and ears of this neighborhood. Street-wise, funny, hip, and confident. She is the most naive, and probably the youngest of the Urchins. Alongside Ronnette and Crystal, Chiffon serves as the Greek Chorus to this comedic tragedy. She both observes/comments on the action of the play and also participates, especially when there’s an opportunity to make a little pocket money. Must be excellent dancer and singer, adept with tight harmonies (F5-Ab3).
