Freckles, 20s, acne problems; ambitious, but naive. Good heart but some backwards beliefs.

Vámonos

(All characters are Black Dominicans.)
Juana: Late 40’s, single mother of 3 [Alex, Yours, and Edward], abuela of 1 [Baby Chris]. Very
dedicated to family but toxic in her language toward her children. She likes to let loose and have fun
just as much as she is ready to lay the hammer down and hold authority in her home.
Yoira: 20, the only girl of her siblings and middle child. Struggles between how she can redefine being
a mother and keep Juana off of her back. She doesn't regret having her newborn son, but she
certainly had bigger dreams for herself.
Edward/Alex: Edward: 15, the youngest of his siblings. athletic and smart but unfocused in school.
Struggling between being a teen and being a self-defined man. Challenged with anger issues and
yearning for a healthy male role model which he lost when his brother left to serve in the Army. Alex:
23, Juana’s oldest. Recently enlisted into the army. Young dude who struggles with college but wanted
to make something of himself and joined the military (pre 9/11).
Anna: Early 40’s, Juana’s younger sister, mother of 2, happily married to Pablo. She is a devout
Catholic, stay at home mom, and loves to honor tradition. She’s uptight but cares deeply about family
values and the wellbeing of everyone. She’s stubbornly Republican and believes the Democrats use
minoritized people for their own circus to unravel the good word of God.
Pablo: 40’s, Anna’s husband. Cab driver, un charlatan, has been in the U.S. longer than his wife--their
marriage granted her citizenship, very up to date with current events, loves to talk and tell long stories,
loves sports, food, and his family. He’s not a womanizer, he’s a soft jovial spirit who likes to present
tough but teach with grace.
Juli: 15, chubby, Anna’s oldest child, feels out of place in her Dominican culture and values, wants the
highest good for everyone she loves but often feels silenced. She’s navigating her intuitive gifts and
magic--without guidance from her family who shames the notion that she had visions.
Junior: 12, Julie’s annoying little brother. Loves video games and sugar. Victimizes himself to get his
way--he’s very smart. He yearns to be validated.
