BREAKDOWN

AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE
by Henrik Ibsen, directed by Cathey Sawyer
First rehearsal: 4/9/18
Runs: 4/27/18 – 5/12/18

SEEKING:

TOM STOCKMAN—Male, 40s-50s; A doctor and scientist, Stockman’s passions often carry him too far. Like many a genius, he rejects compromise and is all too willing to sacrifice himself to the causes he believes in.

PETER STOCKMAN—Male, 40s-50s; Stockman’s elder brother, more concerned with maintaining the status quo than sharing the truth, the town’s mayor and a consummate politician who aims ever to appear upright and unapproachable.

HOVSTAD —Male, 30s-40s; As editor of the left-leaning local newspaper, The Daily Messenger, Hovstad is a spokesperson for the little guy. He is drawn to the charisma of a strong leader and he is willing to compromise his ideals if it serves his desired ends.

BILLING—Male, 30s-40s; A reporter for The Daily Messenger, a firebrand who dreams that revolution will come to right the injustices at work in his town, but caves quickly and easily once the tide turns.

ALAKSEN— Male, 50s-60s; Publisher of The Daily Messenger, his mission is to keep everything equal and everyone happy. However much of a stir his paper might cause, Alaksen is happy to keep the peace and blend into the woodwork.

MORTEN KIIL—Male, 60s-70s; Father-in-Law to Dr. Stockman, Kiil is a man of quiet craft and cunning. Kiil is a man most content when he is steering others to do his bidding.

CAPTAIN HORSTER—Male, 60s; Horster is a man of grit and independence. He is a good friend to Doctor Stockman and stands by him when others turn their backs. Horster plays by his own rules and has no interest in conforming to what anyone else wants or expects.

CATHERINE— Female 40s-50s; Tom Stockman’s wife. More level-headed than her idealist husband, Catherine places her family above everything else. She alone is able to challenge Tom when he goes too far, but she will not suffer anyone else who questions his strength and integrity.

PETRA—(Female. late teens-early 20s) Petra is a teacher and an independent young woman making her way in the world. She is her father’s daughter. Fiercely intelligent, feverishly determined, and unflaggingly honest.

FRANK - Male, 30’s-40’s; Seemingly humorless misanthrope. Romantic and brooding. He has no patience for the ridiculousness of the Parisian society – until he falls in love.

ELIANTE - Female, 20’s; Young society lady. Reserved yet secretly yearns for action. She is a lovesick virgin.

PHILANTE - Male, 20’s; Polite and tactful. Appealing in his selflessness. Has a penchant for drag.

ARSINOE - Female, 40’s-50’s; Self-righteous, calculating and bitter – in a fun way. Clings to her lost youth and beauty.

CLITANDER - Male, 50’s; Rich suitor to Celimene. A bloated, influential fashionista. Because of his money, he gets away with things he really shouldn’t.

ORONTE - Male, 40’s; A terrible poet and suitor to Celimene. A societal jack-of-all trades who seeks status.

ACASTE - Male, 30’s; Egotistical Marquis. Proud of being very stupid.

DUBOIS/BASQUE - Male, 60’s; Bumbling manservant to Celimene and Acaste. Put upon and ignored. Must be good at physical comedy.
