BREAKDOWN
In the Winter of 1934 in Nick Laine’s soon-to-be foreclosed guesthouse in Duluth, MN, the Great Depression has left its mark on the struggling residents, all of whom are one piece of bad luck removed from disaster. With little to be thankful for except for the kindness (and sometimes the deceit) of strangers, they gather together as a group of survivors for their last Thanksgiving together before scattering to whatever is next for them. PLEASE NOTE: The entire company functions as an ensemble, both creating the world of the boarding house and singing as a group and are onstage almost all the time. All must be STRONG singers with the ability to blend in the choral parts and be able to step out with their own unique voice as well. Rock and folk vocal styles are a preference, but if you think you don’t sound like anyone else, then we want to hear that too as a unique vocal presence is also a part of a proposal about what our country and this music calls for.
SEEKING:
OFFSTAGE UNDERSTUDY MAN: 30’s. Black. To understudy JOE SCOTT (see above) and ELIAS BURKE: A grown man with the developmental capabilities of a four year old child. Although he has a sweet and benign spirit, he has a physical strength that he doesn’t understand or know how to control. Also understudies ENSEMBLE. Seeking an actor with a large range to cover both baritone and HIGH tenor solos.
OFFSTAGE UNDERSTUDY WOMAN 1: Late 20’s – Early 30’s. To Understudy KATE DRAPER: She is beautiful and bright with a life ahead full of possibilities. In a town this small, she will always be the one who got away. Also understudies ENSEMBLE.
OFFSTAGE UNDERSTUDY WOMAN 2: Late 30’s – 40’s. To Understudy ELIZABETH LAINE: Nick’s wife. A complicated and contentious woman at the best of times she is now struggling through the haze of progressively worsening dementia. She had, long ago, fallen out of love with her husband but the two are now forever tied together by the needs of her caretaking. She is still more than capable of showing flashes of the woman she used to be. Tough, acerbic and a ferocious defender of her two kids. To understudy MRS. BURKE: Elias’ mother. She has devoted herself to caring for her son at the expense of her own happiness and fulfillment, with little or no help from her husband. Was attractive and is now trying to hold on to something that is slipping away along with the best years of her life. She numbs the pain with an addiction to morphine. A role for a character actor with both dramatic and comedic skills. Also understudies ENSEMBLE.
