SEEKING

Equity actor/singers. PLEASE NOTE: All must be extremely strong actors and singers. The style of music is legit Broadway, leaning towards classical (think Leonard Bernstein). Because the show is set in rural England we are looking for interesting actors of all types who have the acting ability to inhabit that time and place. Dialects may be used but not necessary for the audition. See breakdown.

PREPARATION

Prepare a brief legit Broadway song (i.e. Leonard Bernstein or Harvey Schmidt). Bring sheet music; accompanist provided. Bring picture and resume.

BREAKDOWN

Far From The Madding Crowd is a musical adapted from the Thomas Hardy novel. Set in 1870 rural England (Dorset area), it charts the journey of Bathsheba Everdene, a young woman of 20, struggling to make her own way in a world that dictates women’s roles and behaviors.
Seeking:
ENSEMBL/JAN COGGAN
Male (40s-50s). Baritone or Baritenor. Any ethnicity. Quietly authoritative and respected by the other hands. He champions Bathsheba when she first assumes control of the farm. He is sensitive to Gabriel’s feelings for Bathsheba and quietly sympathizes. Happily married, he puts up with his boisterous wife.

ENSEMBLE/HENERY FRAY
Male (Mid-40s) Baritone. Any ethnicity. Long-suffering and with a “keener appreciation of the miseries of life than the ordinary man,” He dislikes women in general and Bathsheba in particular, although he grows to admire her.
ENSEMBLE/JOSEPH POORGRASS
Male. (Late 30s) Bari-tenor. Any ethnicity. A would-be singer who can’t hold his liquor or a tune, Joseph is extraordinarily shy, especially around women. He grows braver when he’s in his cups, but wilts at the first challenge.

ENSEMBLE/BILLY SMALLBURY
Male (Late 40s) Tenor. Any ethnicity. A “cheerful soul in a gloomy body,” Billy loves to gossip. Joseph follows his lead. Also plays PENNYWAYS.

ENSEMBLE/CAINY BALL
Male (18) Tenor. Any ethnicity. Brought up on the farm, he is painfully shy around Bathsheba, especially since he stutters, but grows in self-confidence during the course of the show. He idolizes his mentor Gabriel.

ENSEMBLE/LIDDY SMALLBURY
Female (20) Mezzo. Any ethnicity. Billy's daughter and Bathsheba’s only confidante. Though fairly levelheaded, a certain girlish giddiness is never far below the surface and she brings this quality out in Bathsheba as well.

ENSEMBLE/MRS. COGGAN
(Late 40s). Mezzo. Jan Coggan’s wife. Any ethnicity. She is solid, no-nonsense, and down to earth. All of the other farm workers defer to her, including her husband.

ENSEMBLE/SOBERNESS MILLER
(20s). Soprano. Any ethnicity. A good-hearted but empty-headed servant prone to romantic daydreams and gossip.
