BREAKDOWN

Brought to an unfamiliar island, newlywed Desdemona finds every opportunity to shake off her mask of obedience and purity. Bound to a selfish mistress and an indifferent husband, Emilia works tirelessly towards some kind of freedom. Elated by her new love and new captivating friend, Bianca knows she’s moving up in the world. Three women woven together by circumstance wait, think, scream, laugh, claw and fight together always knowing their fates could be decided by murderous men just on the other side of the door. Paula Vogel’s reimagining of what happened when the women of Othello weren’t being watched.

Desdemona: 20s white: Thrill seeking, charismatic, bold, self involved, privileged. This character is involved in choreographed intimacy (Desdemona is spanked by Bianca*)

Emilia: 30-50s any race/ethnicity: Self preserving, witty, bitter, grounded, narrow-minded. This character is written in British dialect with flexibility around the region.

Bianca: 20s-40s any race/ethnicity: Romantic, generous, friendly, confident, naive. This character sings/plays music, is written in cockney dialect and is involved in choreographed intimacy (Bianca spanks Desdemona*).

Self tapes do not have to be in dialect but please clearly notate your dialect experience in your email or resume (including non-UK dialects). Be prepared to work sides in dialect should you be invited to our zoom auditions.

*”If you'd like to review the scene with choreographed intimacy before submitting we can send it to you.
