BREAKDOWN

In a small Boston suburb, a single schoolteacher is struggling to get by when the wealthy father of one of her students surprises her with a financial proposal that could change her daughter's life. Suddenly, their worlds collide in ways that open up the question: What truly separates the haves and the have nots? Is it wrong to seize an incredible chance, even if the circumstances seem questionable? Loosely inspired by a passage from The Great Gatsby, this timely new play probes the troubling relationship of finance to educational opportunity in American life today.
KEVIN O’NEILL
Lead. Male, 40s. Any Ethnicity. Handsome and confident. A money-man whose charisma makes him hard to read. In fact he may not even be sure of his own motives. He’s privileged, and he isn’t passive about it. Accustomed to having things work out for him – whether it’s making money or making problems go away. CONOR’s father.
CARA RUSSO
Lead. Female, late 30s. Any ethnicity. An attractive teacher, principled and incorruptible. A single mother to ANGELA, she supports them both, but there’s not much left over at the end of the day for luxury items, never mind college. She will do what it takes to secure a better future for her daughter.

ANGELA RUSSO
Female. Seeking 18+ to play 16. Any ethnicity. Ordinary looking and carrying a few extra pounds. Very intelligent but modest and hard on herself. Wise beyond her years, she is often the voice of reason among those around her. Has scaled her ambitions to her circumstances – she tries not to want more from life than she thinks she’ll be able to get. CARA’s daughter.
CONOR O’NEILL
Male. Seeking 18+ to play 16. Any ethnicity. Gorgeous, privileged and basking in it, he’s used to coasting. Never has to work hard, so he never does. Not quite sure what he wants out of life, or how to figure it out. KEVIN’s son.
CATHY CONZ
Female, late 30s. Any ethnicity. Longtime friend of CARA’s. Brash, fun, working class. Unashamed of her station in life, and quick to defend herself. A truth-teller.
GEOFF HOSMER
Male, mid 40s. Any ethnicity. Affluent family therapist, he is the embodiment of relaxed suburban splendor. Very comfortable in his skin.
PAMELA HOSMER
Female, 30s- early 40s. Any ethnicity. Wife of GEOFF, married into wealth. She is unhip but makes a point of seeming to be in the know.
ALICE TUAN
Female, early 40s. Asian. International relations professor, total academic who speaks her mind, not particularly warm. She constantly borders on becoming a helicopter parent.
